Blood in urine (for men)

So here’s the thing, 2 nights ago after hitting the trainer for an hour i went to take a leak and there was quite a bit of blood (maroon red) in my pee, and frankly, i was really scared :stuck_out_tongue: so i went to see the doctor the next day.

Blood and urine tests came back and doc says that i’m “very healthy” (aside from the blood present in the urine); he thinks it’s just some capillary burst and it’ll ‘flush through’, nothing to be worried about.

I’ve been doing more sitting forward and on aerobars for the last 2 months+; I’m wondering if it’s because of my saddle (fizik road arione) and if there’s a need to get something with a wider area on the nose?

I’m guessing this isn’t a common tri-related problem?

p.s. pls excuse the bloody details

This happened to me about 15 years ago during my heavy weight lifting days and prior to my involvement in triathlon. Did the doctor thing. Found nothing wrong and has not happened again. If no reoccurence, probably not a problem. Don’t think it’s related to your saddle or tri. In our case could be due to strenuous physical activity. Just my $.02.

Not a doctor, but blood in the urine can be an indicator of lots of bad things.

At a minimum, I would wait a week or two and have it get tested again. If positive, get to a urologist ASAP.

I had blood in urine once, and it turned out to be an indicator of an odd infection that antibiotics wiped out rapidly. It had the urologist’s attention initially though.

Your MD was probably right, did he scope you? Blood in urine could be sumthin could be nutten. From the top, Renal tumor, renal stone, ureteral tumor, ureteral stone, bladder tumor, cystitis, prostatitus, or just a small vessle that went bust. I would keep track and consult a Urologist if you haven’t allready and/or it continues.

Could be a kidney stone, even without flank pain, when they start wiggling, the tissue is torn a bit.

Yeah, i think you’re right. could just be physical exertion.

Actually, I’m really hesitant to get back onto my bike. but just to put my mind at ease, does anyone ride on a fizik arione (road) in aerobars position?

Oh…i work with bacteria in the lab, so i was really worried about E. coli infection too. Test results show it’s clear so that’s good

Yes, I use an Arione (road) with aerobars. No problems. My guess is a small, renal calculi (stone) since most endurance athletes are often in/out of dehydration making these a little more likely. Luckily, you didn’t have any pain with it (ouch).

I’ve had blood in the urine several times, the last time it was a symptom of Kidney cancer. Previous episodes were attributed to riding dirtbikes.
Did you get any futher tests i.e. Cat scan?

Were you riding on rough roads where you’re internal organs get all beat up?

I used to get blood in my urine from long runs and was dehydrated. The blood occurred because my internal organs didn’t have any fluids to “cushion” them.

After I learned proper hydration practice the problem went away.

Blood in the urine is commonly seen in runners, especially after running long distances. Studies have shown that 20-90% of marathon runners will have some blood in their urine (some in trace amounts that cannot be seen visually). This occurs because of the jarring of the bladder walls that occurs while running. It will be more likely to happen in an empty bladder where there is no fluid to dampen (no pun intended) the forces on the bladder. Cyclists can also experience this form the vibration of the road through the saddle. Just be sure to monitor and stay on top of this, working closely with your doc. I’m not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn express last night.

Hmm… this dehydration thing really does sound like me. i usually go about my day with minimal water, not that i’m proud of it. But i think this is a good call to start taking in more fluid.

Nope, no cat scans or anything - doc just took my blood and urine to run some tests, which came back fine. phew Follow-on checkup’s on friday.

I guess i’ll still sit on my arione and drink my water
thanks folks!

By the way, some varisty runner was telling me that i shouldn’t drink too much water either - the standard being that pee should not be clear more than three times a day.

ok… enough about pee talk :stuck_out_tongue:

i don’t think anyone’s mentioned the other possibility yet, which is that it wasn’t blood. if you’ve got rust-coloured blood and are an athlete, it could be ketosis. i remember mike stroud writing an article about peeing dark red during an attempt to run 7 marathons in 7 days (on seven continents. . .)

anyway, when your muscles get broken down too much to repair, ketones get passed into your urine. same reason anorexic people sometimes smell bad: their muscles are breaking down.

just another possibility, particularly if it was right after a hard workout, and was a one-off. but the others are right in saying that generally speaking blood in the urine can be a bad thing; i think you were right to go to the doctor and keep a close eye on it for a while.
