I race about 12-18 times per year. I do many small 500/800 local races and a few of the large races (Memphis in May) and others. Most if not all of these races have their share of first timers. I love it they are enthusiastic, full of energy, always happy, and very good for our sport. They also do not know the rules. They ride out to wide, ride side by side, get upset when they hear passing on the left, turn and look which causes them to move into your path when they hear passing on the left, Refuse to move to the right, and other blocking problems. I am not real fast but I do like to race and this can really slow you down and at times put you in danger.
Drafting may affect my place but usually not my race. Blocking affects my race. I think the rules should be on every entry form, and gone over at the pre-race meeting.
Well, the rules are generally gone over at every pre-race meeting, but not everyone feels they need to attend.
I find a good “ON YOUR LEFT” serves to get the slower cyclists out of my way. On two lap courses I’ve been known to get out of breath from announcing my pass, but if you give them a second or two they generally move.
think of this as motivation to improve your swim. Being out of the water infront of the Newbs meas you won’t have to pass them on the bike.

And how then to deal with wave starts? Always be in the first wave?
Oh sure, wave starts. Well I guess you would have to be a really good swimmer ![]()
OK, how about a little bell on the aero bars then? RING! RING!, On your left!, RING! RING!
I’ve seen that… The bell. Makes you think some one’s granny is about to pass.
