Bloating during long runs

me and my girlfriend have reached the 2 hr mark on our long runs and i drink during the whole run – strap my fuelbelt wherein she only drinks after every loop -50-min loop. i asked her why she didnt like using her belt she said she always feels bloated if she drinks every 20mins. she is around 5 feet tall and around 100lbs so she runs like the wind. i did mention that her Hr might be too high thats why she feels bloated. any other causes? we always run easy and i know she never goes beyond 150 bpms.

To some extent this is a trainable response. Certainly she needs to be drinking (though there’s some evidence that drinking more less often is the most effective way to get fluids into the body).

What’s she drinking?

i guess but temps here are always in the high 20s–degree centirgrade that is. we always bring with us the powdered gatorade not the commercialized ones here being sold.–the ones that are already bottled have been made to be a bit sweeter than normal compared to the powdered ones

Dennis-

Usually this is caused from drinking at too high of an osmality. How concentrated is the drink? When in doubt add water.

Infinit nutrition’s website does a good job explaining osmality and how it effects your gut.

Okay, there can be an issue, though, that if you mix drinks either too weak or too strong they can cause problems with absorption into the body. This can lead to bloating.

Myself, I only really use the products of one company when running, but to my knowledge they’re only really available in the UK.

thanks! will check…her recovery seems to be not that fast and this might also be a factor as well.

they made gatorade here more consumer friendly thats why they made it sweeter just as so anybody can buy it and drink it even w/o working out.

Interesting question.

One thing I have noticed with some Fuel Belt users is they wear the belt too high on their waist and it constricts the gastroinstestinal tract, or feels like it does.

I know this sounds very rudimentary, but maybe trying to wearing the belt low on the hips like a gun-slinger. That might help a little.

Too weak can have a similar effect, of course…

ill try to ask her again but i know she wears it around her hips but im betting that she`s diluting the drink a bit but will have her try it again.

The Gartorade powder is better that the normal Gatorade becasue it uses dextrose and does not irritate the gut like fructose can. I think the previous posters are correct, that it might be that the drink is too concentrated and your gut is not able to absorb. Kinda like eating solids, tough to digest if it is too heavy/thick.

You might want to look at a maltodextrine based product. You can mix maltose at very high concentrations (14-16% solution rates) and still have it easily absorbed. Hammer, INFINIT and the new Gatorade Endurance are primarily maltose based products. I am sure that there are others.

i would want to try infinit but shipping will kill me if i have it shipped here to philippines. would diluting it also ause her problems?

It’s a hard question to answer. The question is do you want the fluid or do you need that calories? The answer is probably a balance of both.

WHat products can you get down there? Enervit is a great product and Pro4 I hear is good although I have never tested it.

what we have here basically is gatorade and powerbar endurance and we go with the gatorade because of the price. and if i order on-line and have it shipped to my sisters place in NY--the shipping will not kill me but she will because shell be paying for the shipping to here LOL. its a little of both. a scoop of the powder has 250 calories already…enough for her tiny frame. she doesnt perspire as heavily as me–im 59 153lbs

It’s probably too simple but could the issue be that she drinks from the fuel belt bottles on the run vs stopping to drink at the end of the loop? When I first started using the fuel belt I had a similar issue with feeling bloated and ultimately it had to do with swallowing air rather than the drink formulation.

that too might be a cause, she hates to walk during her runs and just stops after every loop to drink. she did said that it felt the drink just sloshed inside her and not that feeling wherein there`s gas inside

I recall reading a study in Runner’s World once that said most people in marathons drink too much and have digestion issues. At 100 pounds, then she probably should not be drinking more than ¼ liter per hour then it is probably more like 8 to 12 oz per hour. It does not matter how hot it is either; your stomach can only take so much. Too many people think the idea behind proper hydration is to put back what you lose, but that is all wrong. You only need to put back enough to keep you above that minimum level of hydration necessary before performance declines. If a person has to urinate in the middle of the run or in a race then they are drinking too much.

i think you are correct, chances are she might be drinking way too much for her size and even during a bike ride i eat almost 2-3x as much as her. but normally it comes out during our runs but during bike rides we carry identical bottles but i finish em faster than her.
