Blisters and SuperGlue

OK, so I read through some of the posts re: blister treatment, and the overwhelming response for repair is SuperGlue. But is this safe for blisters without skin covering them? I have a blister on my heel that is about the size of a quarter and an open, bleeding, oozing mess (= no skin anywhere in sight). SuperGlue will fix this? I’ve got to get some miles in before my race in 2 weeks.

As a guy who has logged numerous 40 - 100 milers with a 100lb rucksack, I’m no stranger to blisters, callouses and hamburger feet. We use tincture of benzoid and mole skin to create a new layer of skin to abuse. One of the keys is to keep it dry.

Be advised, the stuff stings like hell and is a bit smelly. Better to be a little proactive and try to toughen up those hooves. Unfortunately, swimming will not help in the adhesion and you will have to re-apply the tincture often, two or three times a day.

Another trick is to coat your entire foot with the stuff and let it dry just until its tacky. Then, roll your sock on like a condom smoothing it out as you roll it down from the toe to the ankle. Once in place, use some adhesive tape to secure your sock to your ankle in order to keep it from slipping down and rolling up under your heel.

There is also a product called Second Skin that is more like clear finger nail polish and will help to secure the edges of your blister.

I’ve gone so far as to take a hypodermic needle and first drain the blister’s fluid, then inject it with the tincture of benzoid. Keep a stiff upper lip and be Hooah!

Well, I just bought the SuperGlue…still debating on using it…Proactive would have been to NOT try running without socks 2 weeks before a race!!

I have never had a blister that superglue wasnt good on. Im not sure about the bleeding though. I’d wait until the bleeding stopped, so you dont get the glue into your venous system. Then, just coat that hole over, give it a minute before putting socks on if you ever want them to come off again, and head out the door.

Um, too late for that. Glue is on. OUCH! I read the warnings and it did not say to not use on open wounds…

No one said anything about the pain! Holy shit this stuff hurts.

It also doesn’t say “do not drink” on the side of the gas pump or “do not bash self in head” on claw hammer labels…yet.

I generally think of the superglue trick as a last resort during an adventure race or an ultra to get you to the finish line, and hang the consequences for your skin over the following days because “it’ll heal eventually”…with two weeks to go you probably would have been better off trying compeed or some similar medical product, or maybe just taking a couple of days off (gasp!) or running in the pool. Hopefully what you’ve done will hold together but it certainly isn’t going to promote healing.

You mean we’re not supposed to drink it?

Yes, thus far I am not pleased with the result. Dammit.

I say again
