Blaze Laser Bike Light

A pretty cool idea for a new bike light. Just thought I’d share. $200 for a light is a bit expensive, but there are others that are not far off that mark. I question the effectiveness of the light with all the other lights on the road at night. Thoughts?

I think I saw this when it was still on Kickstarter… It’s a neat idea, somewhat similar to the (red) rear-projecting image of a bike lane I saw maybe a year or a year and a half back. Not sure what happened to that one…

Anything (reasonable) that helps to make cycling safer is worth investigating. I’ve got well more than $200 invested in my rear light, and about the same if not more in the front (kind of depends on which bike). For cars turning across my lane - either oncoming or from a side street, I think the best is a powerful headlamp that I can use to “sweep the windshield”. That doesn’t require a driver to notice me, an image on the road, or my light beam - rather it forces them to notice that something is there because I’ve shone my light directly at them. And with my lights it might well be a train. ;p

Good Idea, bit pricey though
BTW, Cars turning into the path of cyclist is not a blindspot problem, it is drivers inability to judge oncoming bikers speed and distance. Any strong light would allieviate that problem

Have to say, looks like a gimmick to me. Can’t really see how it’s going to make a lot of difference since it doesn’t seem that bright and in any case car drivers are looking in front, not down at the pavement. Plus the basic light performance doesn’t seem great - e.g. a light that is comparable in price such as the Exposure Diablo (which I have) has a Low mode which throws out more lumens (380) than the Blaze High mode and lasts 3 times as long (6 hours).

Right now I’m commuting in the dark both morning and evening, and the set-up I’ve landed on which covers all bases is:

  • Powerful front and rear light mounted to the bike
  • Cheap wheel-mounted lights to help drivers see me from the side
  • Helmet-mounted light which flashes to front and rear to give a higher light that stands out from the traffic and which I can also direct at any junctions where I know drivers tend to come out

I have one of the rear-projecting laser “bike lanes”. Cute gimmick, but it can’t be seen unless it’s quite dark outside.

What works for me is the strobe mode on my bike light. It pulses between high and low settings. You can still easily see the road (no strobelight effect since it never goes off), it gets a driver’s attention, and (the coolest part) it makes all the reflective parking and stop signs flicker for 200m (super attention grabbing).

For the rear, a 2W (can be seen in daylight) red blinky.

The blindspot accidents she’s referring to appear to be the “right hook” type collisions.

…and could be modified to set the distance for the draft zone! Is there green light on the tire in front of you? Then you are drafting!
