DUI Charge In Bicyclist Wreck In Fort Walton Beach
"
Several cyclists were injured when they were hit by a car on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just before 8 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the bikers had stopped off the side of the road to fix a flat tire when 32 year-old Jennifer Wilson of Fort Walton beach lost control of her minivan and ran into them.
The FHP says Wilson passed out before running off the road."
One person still listed in critical condition. The wee bright side in all this is that the driver still hasn’t made bail, so at least she’s not back to a position where she can drive.
I was just discussing this at work with a friend, I had hoped this was the accident Tom had posted earlier and not a second one. No such luck. Wear your helmets and use lights at night, the more the better. I currently have 2 headlights one steady, one flashing, a 5 led flashing taillight and a 5 led red flasher clipped to my messenger bag plus the Tireflys light up valve covers on my commuter bike. It also has all it’s reflectors and i wear a Nike jacket that lights up and blinks. I still get people who don’t see me.
In the story I saw, it mentioned the three cyclists were employees of a local bike shop out on a regular ride. Didn’t mention the name of the shop though. There is no amount of defensiveness that will protect you from a drunk running a stop sign at 70 mph, other than not being on the roads at all. Another tragedy.

I just learned the fatality was a young man who worked at D&D Bicycles in Northville. The store manager, Dan Foster, a long time local bike shop employee and cyclist with whom I have worked, suffered a broken hand in the accident.
Dan Foster is the manager at D&D Bicycles in Northville.
Thanks for the information Tom. If you hear about any sort of memorial events, maybe you could pass that along as well.
