Biking to Napa Valley from SF?

Hello Bay Area ST-ers – is there a way to ride from San Francisco up to Napa Valley that’s not overly car-laden? I can’t determine any obvious route from my Bay Area bike riding maps. Is it better to ride from the East Bay?

Any ideas appreciated!

Yeah, I think going the East Bay route would be best. I haven’t actually done this yet but try getting over to Crockett (via Pinole Valley Rd. to SP Avenue or Appian to SP Ave.) to the new bridge and then going from there. You still have to negotiate the Vallejo mess a bit but at least it doesn’t last too long.

I’ve ridden home from the Lake Berryessa swim to SF or Mill Valley several times. Not the best ride Marin has to offer, but easy to stay off the main highways. How familiar are you with the area? This will help me know how many dots to put along the way. Basically, do you need road names or will landmarks do because you know how to connect the dots.

SF - Cheese Factory - Petaluma - Santa Rosa - Oakville Grade - Napa

If you want something really scenic, take GGB to Marin and Highway 1 all the way up the coast then cross over around Tomales or even Bodega (depends on where in Napa Valley you want to go). Be forewarned however, highway 1 is not the safest road in the world for bikes. At least heading north you would not be right on the edge of the cliffs looking down several hundred feet! Might be a fun ride if you went very early in the morning before traffic got too bad.

Ahhh yes. That map looks familiar! I participated in the 2002 Providian Relay. My team gave me all the tough climbs! Compliment I guess?

Now you have made me miss San Francisco, as I moved away last year. Great place…
