Bike Tune-up

I am relatively hands on but I have been riding and racing for a few years on the same bike and wonder if I need to visit my trusted mechanic and have him perform some below the surface maintenance on my bike. My wheels and hubs are fine, but is there something more in terms of preventative maintenance that I should be having done on a periodic basis (bottom bracket, headset, etc.)?

I always like to repack fresh grease in my wheels once a year. BB’s mostly these days have no service interval. I recable once a year…lube all my pivots on my brakes and Der…I rebuild my rear Der just for fun…replace my chain every 5000 miles…that is about it.

If you’ve got a sealed bottom bracket (most are) and headset, little to no maintenance is needed. They’re actually throw away items nowadays. You can remove the crankset and regrease the spindles on the bb (assuming it’s a splined bb, if it’s square, don’t grease it!), and remove the fork to regrease the external parts of the headset, but nothing major is usually needed.

If you’re riding a steel frame, checking inside the tubing and spraying a rust preventative is always a good idea.
