Bike Training (4)

I have been a very competitive runner for over 10 years and know almost everything there is to know about training. I understand the importance of training towards a peak incorporating long runs, interval runs, tempo runs, many different forms of speed training etc. I have biked casually most of my life but am just getting into triathlons and duathlons. When you train on the bike do you just do long rides and shorter rides closer to your lactate threshold and at a higher percentage of your VO2 max, or do you do speed workouts on the bike?

You’ll probably get a lot of different responses on here but I think everyone will ask what is you goal? Distance (Sprint, Oly, 1/2 Iron, Full Iron)? Current bike fitness?

Anyway based on my experience and things I’ve read here I would suggest “more is more” for the first few years. I think a 70+mi ride every saturday and 30-60 during the week can’t do anything but help. Once you get a year of that mileage then you can start doing speed workouts. If you have the $ I think a power meter is a great tool, again just ride with it for now and collect data. Do some races this season then next season you can look at your avg’s and work on improving them.

Stop reading ST and go bike
