Bike Shipping (1)

Hello.
I am looking to ship a Kuota Kalibur XL to a race which the normal Tri shipping companies are not going. I have read all about shipping boxes. I guess I am worried about my bike and good cases. Should I ship through the airline (for $175 each way) or go through FedEx? Every race I have been lucky to be able to drive to and want to know what real triathletes are using/shipping with. All I am getting on the other forums for biking are not really tri specific, especially with $2500 sets of wheels!!!

Thanks for any help fellow triathletes!

Cheers!

If your flying, bike box on flight with you both ways.

I prefer shipping by FEdex ground-- cheaper and I can insure it for it’s real value. I’ve also seen how bags and boxes are handled by the airlines.

I always taking wheels with me on board as a hand luggage (double bad is a plus) Sometimes they don’t fit in the scanning machine, but officers checking them other way. may-be only 1-2 times (out of, lets say 30+) I/we had to go back and send it with other baggage. make the tires flat and take off the cassete - it was issue few times…
for bike it’s hockey (goalkeeper’s) bag - dismounting fork, pedals and RD - free of charge.
you may want to check DHL - I shipped bike few years ago for 14$ from CA to OR… not sure about latest changes, though
