I’m staying in the middle of kingston and was going to head out for a ride and was thinking about heading west on rte 28 into the catskills–is that an OK road or are there better options? I don’t mind the hills.
Rt 28 is a nice road by other area’s standards but it’s the least nice road we have. My best simple advice is to take 28 a couple of miles west of the Thruway to
Rt 28a. You can’t miss it; there’s a big old doll house with a new log house behind it. Go left there and you will go on the south side of the Ashokan Res, no traffic, nice road, nice view; nice rolling ride. You could go about 50 miles out and back. If you want a loop; go on 28a until it ends at rt 28, go west a few miles until Rt 212 and circle back through Woodstock (watch out for Hippies!), work your way to Sawkill Rd and back to north Kingston.
I wish I could explain better. I love riding on these roads, my house is in Shandaken about ten miles from your turn around on rt 28. I can go 100 miles and only see 1 traffic light and only a few cars!
For a great challenge; find Rt 23a in Saugerties and take it to Hunter and back. Wear your climbing shoes!
How long are you in Kingston? There are lots of great options.
That’s perfect, I’m staying at some two star hotel in the middle of town, so I can do the 28 to 28a route without a lot of fuss, I’m excited to get a nice ride in, rain or shine.
