So I bought a new road bike, I was fit and went with the recommendation of the LBS. I’ve ridden it once and just feel like the bike is too big, am I SOL or should the LBS swap me out for the smaller frame.?
Before buying they did tell me that either the 56 or 58 could work for me.
talk to them before you ride it again…
As long as it is “like new”, I don’t see why they wouldn’t swap it for you, if they’re a decent shop. I’d say they’re under no obligation to if you didn’t pay for a fitting (if you did pay for a fitting, then they definitely should let you swap it), since it was ultimately your choice for the size, but I think most decent/reputable shops wouldn’t resort to that.
I did pay for fitting, and should have insisted on spinning on the smaller bike to compare how it felt
.
My wife had run into a similar issue with her bike fitting this season:
On the initial fitting, she was on a 51, which felt relatively comfortable. As we got her riding, she always felt like she was too compact, not given quite enough room. Called up the shop, who had her come back in (free of charge, mind you), to look at her positioning. Turns out she needed a 54, on a different frame (going from women’s to men’s in the product line). No questions asked swap for the frame. Customer. For. Life.
Hopefully, your shop will do something similar, so long as you didn’t take the thing to the nearest mud pit.
That’s a happy ending. I’ll hope for the same. My problem is the opposite. I feel to “stretched” like I’m reaching for everything
why not try a shorter stem?
I could, but i guess i feel like if a smaller bike could fit me, then i would rather have the smaller bike. it will weigh less and I think its a little easier to maneuver a smaller frame
Have you called or stopped by the shop and talk with them?
I havent yet, because I wanted to know what was reasonable to expect before i had the conversation
.
How much riding experiance do you have? Was the previous bike you were riding the right size? So you are on a 58, how tall are you? Hieght alone does not mean much, just curious? Did they have both bikes, identical, in both sizes? Same price? …Also, did you pick the bike you want, then had them fit? Or did they chose that bike for you because of your measurements
Looked on your username. So you have lots of experiance. My aplogies. If just ridden once, regardless if they did a fit. You should expect to be able to return 100%. No more than a test ride. I think they will help you ore than that though
My previous bike was a 54, but it was an orbea and this is a cervelo. I also had a lot of back pain on the 54 so i had to have a bike where my position could be bit more "relaxed’. I am 5’11, 32inch inseam. I think i’d have been happier with a 56 and a small stack of “risers”…or maybe i just need to get used to a bigger bike…
I am 5’11’ and a 56 is to small for me. You know yourself best though. My guess is you are used to a smaller bike. If you were on a 54 the handlebars you were used to may also be smaller, which would also make it feel larger. …Either way they should let you return. I would talk to them first. You may be happier with just getting used to it. …From seat to bar and to (virtual) end of hoods, on two of my bikes measure the same. Due to geometry difference one feels bigger. Also stem angle and bars. One has old pursuit bars and is not quite as wide. It may be componants. Ask the fitter. …
i’m gonna give the shop a call today…i just wanted to know what was reasonable to expect. I may opt for a bike that feels a little large in order to avoid back pain.but i’d love to have the best of both worlds
I worked in a shop at one time, you should be taken care of. You should expect it, politly of course. Please let me know how it goes
Talked to the owner/fitter, he assured me that I should be on a 58 based on his significant experience with fitting,
Now it’s a tough call, if I take his word and ride to get used to the bike, I bought it, even if unhappy. If I demand a 56, I’m taking a bike that he says is too small, and pretty much insulting him…
Well, do not worry about insulting him. I will tell you this. I am 5’11". I can get more of my measurements for you. A 56 is to small for me. The guy whi originally fit me is Chris Nurre. He invented “The Original Fit Kit” over 30 years ago that is in many shops. Masters in kinisology ect…
I notice you are a Doctor. There have been Dr.s that have given me the wrong advice and some who have not. My trust in them, has a lot to do with a decision. Do you trust the guy or not…? Can you get a second opinion.? I will try to dig up my exact measurements, and post them for you…Let me get a couple of measurements off my bikes too. …I would go with the professional.
Sorry it took a day. This is what I used for finding a bike. Measure bikes to fit this one best, has all my measurements. If you are close to me, you need a 58. Hope this helps your onfidence with the decision…If not, just ignore…This inseam is not a pants measurement, but pushed up in the crotch to the floor.
