What say you? Which is the best. I have a P3SL so I am wondering if there are any clamp issues with the aero seat post. Also, any other tips about putting the bike in the stand.
I have one of the Park Race Stands, you mount the bike on it using the front fork (or the rear dropouts) and the BB rests on it. The disadvantage is that you must take the front wheel (or rear wheel) off to work on your bike, the advantage is that it holds it very firmly, and an added plus is that it is easy to transport to races, friends houses, etc. Anyway, it might suit a bike with an aero post.
Portable? The Minoura ironboard or Ultimate Pro or Ultimate compact would work well for your bike. If you got one of the Parks with the clamps you would have to be very careful with the clamp. You can get the PRS-20 on EBay for about 170 including shipping - although at this point it appears sellers have given up on selling it because they get so little. Lick Bike is a good source for Ultimate Pros.
I just got the Park Tool model that attaches to the wall. I clamp on the top tube, which can crimp if you tighten it too much, but I taped up the adjustment on the clamp so it is right and can’t be changed without some effort. Also, because it is against the wall, I have to take the bike out and flip it around to access the other side. Still better, for me, than taking up a huge part of my garage.
Any of the Ultimate stands are truly excellent (I use the Ultimate Pro), light, and portable
I clamp my p2 on the top tube, but very, very carefully with lots of padding and low torque. I also do not do any high force wrenching with that clamping position (I put the bike on the ground).
I’m a mechanic and I race. Ultimate. No question whatsoever. it’s light, portable, compact (they have a more compact model this year), adjustable, the tripod base with be stable even if the ground is uneven, and the clamp kicks the snot out of Park’s - it fits more bikes, it’s impossible to overtighten accidentally, and it has a quick release.
If you want to take your stand along, there is no other reasonable option than this (1/2 of the price of the park foldable AND half the weight AND fulds up much smaller). However, if $$$ and portability is not an issue, get the pro level Park stand with the 50-lb steel plate base. I love Park in general, but Ultimate makes a better stand.
For the new compact version, expect about $180
Is this it?
that’s not the totally up-to-date version, but it what I own (one of the two, anyway). That’s the regular size. Unless you are 7’6" or like to have your bottom bracket at head height for working on your gike, you don’t need it. Here’s the compact one:
thx much
