I have the great opportunity to spend June 8-14th in Ann Arbor with my in-laws! (sarcasm)
I will be flying with my kids (1&3) so bringing the bike with me isn’t appealing, nor would the chance of not having it over a weekend here if I tried the shipping route, never mind the cost and hassle of breaking down and packing etc. I’m going to be a month out from my first 1/2 and really think this would be a great 5-6 days to get some serious miles in, not too mention that a mile on the road is mile away from the inlaws : ).
I ride a S25 and would love to get something similar but understand that I am probably looking at a standard road bike.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
I don’t live there anymore but I would try two wheel tango. You can find them on the net. Or Great Lakes cyclery. Both great shops. I think two wheel is a bit better. And, most importantly, they are FIST certified :).
If I lived there I’d loan ya mine.
The most popular road biking route in town to my knowledge is the out and back on huron river drive on the north side of town.
Good luck,
Dan
Thank you for the leads Dan,
Unfortunately strikes #1 and #2, neither had a rental program or any idea where I could get a real bike, they knew of a few shops with cruisers.
The in-laws live just a 1/2 mile off the Huron near some big park, I’ve had some great runs along it, I’d sure like to get the bike miles in as well.
Not sure on the bike rental…but if you want to do a real fun triathlon…they’ve got one called the Ann Arbor Triathlon (held in nearby Pinckney). It’s been around for about 20 years…give or take.
It’s a 1/2 mile swim, 14 mile bike, 5 mile trail run. It’s a good kick-off to the season for us folks in Michigan. The date is June 12th. It does fill-up so you might want to register ahead of time.

Did you talk to Tom D’s shop?
It’s not too far?

The week before Julian and Co.
I’m about 5 minutes from Ann Arbor and could probably help you out with a bike. (Everyone needs a Ritchey Breakaway for just this reason!)
Give me the details on your S25 and I’ll see if I can come up with one. I need size, crank length, stem length saddle type, the whole 9 yards. Be sure to bring your shoes and pedals.
Send me an email at d_koesel@hotmail.com or drop me a line at 734-788-1918.
There are 5 group rides a week including a “tri-specific” ride on Thursdays.

Great Lakes: good shop (maybe), horrible owner. I’ve told the story of how the UM team was on good terms with the store manager and worked out a sponsorship deal. the owner, Hank Bednarz, found out. he was not pleased; perhaps he felt he was losing money on the deal. he cancelled our parts order and fired the store manager and his girlfriend. if I met him on a ride I’d spit in his face, but he’s more the proprietor than the store owner. I don’t think he rides much.
I can be a vindictive son of a bitch sometimes.
Thank you Ann Arbor folks, I had always heard about what a great biking community it is. I am working some of the options given here.
I had thought about doing the AA Tri but I have a sprint race and a TT here in UT the week before I come out and really just want to get some long rides/runs and the inlaws live near and belong to a racket and swim club near their house so I am looking at a great oxygen soaked workout week in.
Thanks again everybody.
Well, for added training miles, I am planning on riding to the race, doing the race, and then riding home. Race starts at 8. Planning on leaving my house btw 6-630 am. Takes about 1 hour to get there.
No need to pack alot of crap. No need to worry about parking or all that crap.
This is an option for a long training day.
