Bike Race: Everest Challenge-who is going?

I am thinking about doing the Everestchallenge.com this month in the eastern Sierras. Looks like one hell of a tough race. Has anyone done the race and who else is doing it? I am in decent riding shape but I am worried about the altitude coming up from the coast for the weekend.

Went out there in July for a week and scoped out the course. It’s gorgeous. I hope to win the CAT4 division, but honestly, on a course like that you never know how things are going to go or who is going to show up. There are about 29,035 things that could derail just about anybody’s best laid plans. I payed homage to the mountains though, so I hope they will smile on me in a couple weeks. My easiest gear is a 36x27 and there will be times going up the Ancient Bristlecone Forest climb that I’ll be wishing I had a 27x36, as it has some gnarly little walls and a few extended sections that are brutal, such as the climb from just under 9,000’ up to 10,000’.

I thought you were talking about the Mount Everest Bike Rally, run in conjunction with the Mount Everest 100 mile stage race run:

This has got to be one of the very coolest events around !

I’ve been up to the top of the Bristlecone Forest on assignment for a magazine, this was back in 1989. It is amazing up at that altitude.
I remember how hard a time the rental car I was driving had climbing to the top.
Totally fried the brakes on the way down.

I can share a picture from that shoot if someone else can post it.I’m on a Mac.
Let me know.

Joe,

I’m going to think about it. Not sure I could handle it, but it’d be fun to try.

Thierry asked me if I wanted to do it. But, alas, I am going to a wedding in New Mexico that weekend.

Phew! That was close.

I’ll do Angeles Crest Century the next weekend. Only 11,000 feet in 105 miles. The killer will be Mt. Wilson after 85 miles or so.

I would go up a couple of days early. I recently rode just 22 miles with lsome mild climbs (5-8%) at Mammoth on my first day there. I felt old, at least 55 and I’m only 54.

Just talked to some people from performance cyclery/santa clarita velo that are going up there for the race and they seemed to have trained all summer for it.

They do hill repeats at Mt.Pinos/Frazier park that climbs over 2,000 ft in 10-11 miles and they do it 5 times…pretty core since I hate hills.

Good luck to you all. Maybe next year for me.
