Bike Pjorn from the Montreal Cycling show: PICS

The belt drive shown is made by carbon drive. I saw the same system on a Lynsky at the NAHMB show in Portland, Oregon last weekend. Very interesting. There are likely to be some additional changes made but the design seems very close. Very nice for a fixed gear bike.

Interesting how the top bikes in Kona all have a Canadian connection:

  • Cervelo #1 overall bike at the race and first place in the women’s race last year
  • Argon 18 - second fastest bike split ever at IMH and second place in the womens race and third in the men’s last year
  • Kuota, fastest ever bike split at Kona

Must be something in the water or the ice or the snow!!
You forgot one: 2006 #2 woman - Des Ficker on a Guru Crono.

I went to the Mtl show on Saturday morning. Was there when the doors opened at 10:00 so not much crowd. Fun to walk around.

What surprised me the most (at least during the time I was there) was the demographics of the visitors. I would say at least 80% of the people there where baby boomers and young retirees. Many of them where looking at the tri-bikes liked their were some kind of spaceships from another planet! Lots of people at the booths for bike tours and such, and many looking at the more touring oriented bikes.

Of course, I was too busy cleaning all the mess I did drooling all over the place! Had a nice long chat with the Guru rep. Yes… one day… it will be mine!

No surpise. To these people they are like a spaceship from another planet. To them a BIKE is either a road bike with drop bars, or perhaps a mountain bike. It’s illustrative of how much profile triathlon has outside itself which is not very high at all.

As for the young retirees looking at expensive bike touring trips - that’s actually a significant demographic trend. There is a large group of early baby boomers( current ages 55 - 65) who are still “young”, healthy and who have accumalated a significant amount of personal wealth over the past 30 years. They have retired early with packages and/or generous pensions, sold their orginal homes for massive financial gain and have saved wisely. My own parents are cronologically a bit ahead of this group, but that describes their stituation to a T.
