Bike pedals - can you fly with them in your carry on?

I would rather not put my Vectors in checked luggage or my bike box.

Yup. I’ve done it many times. Always carry-on my shoes, pedals, saddle, helmet.

yes, i do it all the time.

They are not weapons…

I once flew with a pair of Speedplays from Toronto to Vancouver (Air Canada, 2008) and was hassled over them. According to the guy at the X-ray machine they were considered tools because they had threads. I tried to explain to them what they were but he didn’t care to listen.

He said I had two options, throw them in the garbage or pay $15 to mail them to myself. Option #2 was only available if I had a credit card to pay for it.

I don’t know how they would have done this and I’m sure they don’t get a lot of people taking them up on #2 because as soon as I told them I would pay he went to check with what must have been a supervisor. They went back and forth for about 20 to 30 seconds and in the end they just let me get on the plane with them. After that I always put them in with my laugagge.

They are not weapons…

… at least not literally. For a few triathletes, figuratively, they are weapons for guys like Keinle, Starky, Sanders.

I have done it a few times, When I do I make sure they are at a spot easy to get to so the TSA person can see them. The ones that caused the most confusion were my eggbeaters. All I get from TSA is how the heck do you ride a bike with those, then I have to pull out my shoes to explain.

Call the airline to ask
.

The airline call is not a bad idea but checking with TSA is probably better.

Shoes may be debatable…

No problem…just don’t fly with one of those massage sticks through Hong Kong airport and try to pass through security with one in your carry on.

I got pulled over for trying to take a lethal weapon on board, and then had to get interrogated by some toy cops who said that it was dangerous and could be used for assault and can’t go on the aircraft and next time I was in Hong Kong, I could come by and reclaim it and check it in my baggage. Well, that was 2009, and I just finally passed through Hong Kong airport 6 weeks ago and never bothered getting my Massage Stick/Bruce Lee approved “Stealth nunchucks”!!!

As others have said, not an issue.

HOWEVER - Don’t pack your pedal wrench in your carry on. I haver had mine confiscated becuase I was a threat to others in that I might disassemble the seat tray in front of me while in flight.

Funny, but true. I had TSA confiscate my torque wrench because it was too long (more than 7") before I bought the correct one. It was a funny conversation when I asked the TSA guy if he thought I would disassemble the airplane “to spec” using the torque wrench. BTW, no sockets or attachments of any kind, just the wrench. And they still took it. Oh, well, lesson learned about the 7" rule. Likely the pedal wrench fell into that category as well.

Pedals? Maybe, but a Park Pedal wrench, apparently not!! I had my prized Park Pedal wrench that I had owned for years confiscated by airport security a couple of years ago.

at that point you should have unzipped and asked, “oh, and is THIS too long too?”

Ya, they got my pedal wrench too. I wonder what they do with all of them!

I had about 500 bucks worth of snap on stuff with me one time, so like a ratchet and an extension…

Boarding a flight where I was going to be testing some things on my brothers car and wasn’t sure what anyone had so was bringing a few tools.

Nothing I had was over 7" long but said I could connect them to be over 7" and then that would be a weapon, ok guy.

Had a little time so I took the option to go mail them to myself instead of letting them take it, when I got back in line ended up at the same guy, I was like you aren’t too thorough if you didn’t find everything over 7"… This was pre body scan so he was unable to verify…

Funny story Dev.

I lost a set of pedal wrenches once because I forgot to move them from my carry-on to my stowed luggage.

Protip: avoid using the word “tool” and instead use the word “instrument.” Torque wrenches are instruments!!!

I fly with calipers all the time and while I frequently get hassled for them, “instrument” changes the way they assess them vs “tool.”
