Bike overhaul

How often should we get our bikes overhauled. I’ve have a P2C for a year now and all that I’ve done as far as maintenance is cleaned and lubed the drive-train, brakes, washed down the frame, and made minor tune-ups on the derailleurs. I’m not having any issues with the bike. Just wondering if it’s worth the $110 - 130 for the overhaul?

It depends on how often and well you clean the bike. Triathletes are known amongst roadies for dirty bikes and I am no exception. We re too busy training I guess. But this can cause premature cassette and chain wear for sure. If you have the money to spend then go for it once or twice per year. If twice maybe once at the beginning of the year and once a few weeks before your big race (make sure to give yourself 4 or 5 longer rides to see if anything pops up which can happen after an overhaul). My bike always rides way better right after an overhaul and even better with knew chains and cassettes. If you trust your LBS to tell you what needs to be changed maybe you can only overhaul what needs to be fixed instead of paying $130 each time. Of course, the best thing to do is learn this stuff on your own and fix everything yourself.

I just took most of my bikes apart this weekend and cleaned everything. Cogset, cables, greased/lubed cables, replaced pulleys in rear derailleur, etc.

Clean Streak is an awesome product and quick to clean the drivetrain with. Take the cogset off, spray it, brush it, use some towels and ready to be put back on.

I usually change all my cables about once a year, chain every 1500miles or so and cogsets about twice per year. As long as I rotate the chains the cogsets seem to last a while.

What will you get for $130 that you can’t do yourself?

You really buy 2 cassettes and a new chain ever 1500 miles?

Wow …

a lot depends on how much riding you do and the conditions. If you’re doing a lot of riding in wet weather, you’ll need to clean and overhaul your bike more often.

as a rule, I have my bikes overhauled once a year (stripped down to the frame, cleaned and lubed, new cables, and a new chain/cassette if they are worn). I try to keep my bikes pretty clean in general as well.
