Okay, the topic of bikes and traffic laws has been discussed ad nauseum. Most of said discussion has related to stoplights and stopsigns. What do you guys feel about speed limits? I know neighborhoods where the posted speed limit is 15 mph. On a good day I can hit 30 in a sprint. Does this warrant a speeding ticket for me? Or how about some downhills? I know downhills where it is 35 mph for cars but on an empty road I can do around 45 mph. What do you guys think of this?
Who cares? Cars will also break the speed limits, speeding is something like “let the man among you who is without sin cast the first stone.”
I’d think a speeding ticket on the bike would be kinda cool. Not in a 15 zone though.
I once got pulled over for doing 50 in a 40km/h zone (wicked tailwind). Didn’t get a ticket or anything (was before I could drive) but the cop did mention that ALL the rules of the road still applied to me. ![]()
There was a case in Ontario many years ago where a police officer ticketed a 15 yr old kid for speeding on his bike. The kid went to court and acted in his own defence and won.
Apparently the law specifically stated “motorized vehicle”. The judge had no choice but to award the decision to the kid. They rewrote the law to include bicycles shortly afterwards.
