Bike Headlamps

Any recommendations for good headlamps and taillamps? I’ve got a death wish and I want to start my long rides up PCH at 5am. Thank you.

Performance has a sale on these right now. the $40 one with the SLA battery works quite well. I’ve ridden in the dark with Dr 'Dre and his, while heavy, lights the raod very well in total darkness.

I bought a TREK discotek(Ithink that’s what it’s called) rear light, because another guy I ride with has one and I could see him really well from WAY back $15?

Wear something from Illuminite.

depends if you simply want to be seen or to actually see. If it’s just to be seen get a flashing white LED light for the front and a matching Red LED for the rear. If you want to see depending on your price range I’d look at the new super bright single high intensity LED lights, usually labled as 1-Watt LEDs, pick up a cheaper Halogen light such as the reccomended Performance bike. Or the ultimate is a HID light such as the Light and Motion ARC HID which throws mroe light than most car headlights. I have one of these and it’s amazing. www.bikelights.com

Lupine Nightmare or any of the others in the range, the more you spend the lighter and longer they last.

I think mine is the equiv of 40W Halogen on high beam, run time of 2 hours rechargeable, all parts replaceable, very heavy duty.

Reviews rate them as arguably the best MTB racing lights, so they are very good.

If on the other hand you are simply looking for lights to start a ride, these are probably not the way to go as you could use something like Cateye’s LED’s and a lamp to see you through sunrise.

I have two setups depending in what i’m doing. For MTB and night rides I use a NiteRider Flamethrower. For rides that start early or end around dusk I use a Niterider Frazer LED front light. I use a NiteRider TL-30 Taillight. I haven’t foun d anything better than the flamethrower for night riding especially off road and the Frazer is light and doen’t take up a waterbottle cage. My rear light and the frazer rarely leave my bike, the take up no space and are super light. So it really depends on your application and needs. If your just riding in predawn and need light for safety from other riders and cars an led light will work, if you need significant illunimation go for one of the niterider HID setups, IMHO they are worth every penny.

Any recommendations for helmet mounted lights?

Thanks,
Scott

I use a Jetlite Phantom (20W, 15W , 10W). No problems and when using 20Ws the light is almost as bright as a Niterider HID. It’s like Yankee Stadium during a night game. Also great customer service if you should ever need it.

I use a Lights in Motion Arc light for my commuter and CX bike. You can see with this light. I have a cheap performance/nashbar special that uses one C battery for those times you run a few minutes late on the way home.

Lights in Motion, I love it, had it for two-three years now.
