I’m looking for a bike with standard road geometry that takes 650c wheels. Anyone know of a manufacturer that produces such a bike? I’ve been riding QR’s for 6 years, which have all had the steep seat-tube angle. I like the idea of a more standard road frame with the 650c wheels. Thanks
Why do you want that kind of bike?
I’m a fairly small guy (racing weight 145, 5’8") and like the smaller bike. I train and race on hilly terrain. As far as geometry goes, I’ve ridden “road” frames and I love the feel. And above all…very curious to know if a frame like that exists.
Wanting 650 for a road bike for a 5’ 8" guy seems strange. You are plenty big enough for a bike with 700 wheels. There are a lot more of them and they are a lot easier to get parts for. 650 wheels are a logistical pain. They are a necessity for guys like me that would be hard pressed to get low enough for a good aero position with 700 wheels, but I would much rather go with 700 wheels all around if I could.
I wish I had better information for you.
Yes there is such a beast–the old Kestrel 500SCi and 500EMS. I say old because they no longer make them, which is a shame really. The seattube-less design was so sexy! 650c wheels with seattube angle of 74deg. A lot of people used them, especially the smaller sizes, w/ a forward seatpost for a tri-setup because the KM40 used to come only in one rather big size. But. the head tube was long so the bars couldn’t go down too low. I believe Wendy Ingraham used to race on them and so did Nici Hackett and Loretta Harrop for ITU races. It used to be the only non-double triangle ITU legal bike. I actually still have mine and I’m selling it if you’re interested But it’s probably big for you (size 56, 57.5 toptube). I’m 5’9" and it is too long for me. I bought it before I was enlightened by Dan Empfield. I remember seeing some still being sold at racycles.com. Give it a look. And if you have any bigger buddies looking for the same, e-mail me at dockimpoy@pacific.net.ph for pics of my Kestrel.
