Bike fitting in the SF Bay Area

I need some advice on bike fitting.

I’m new to cycling (runner trying tri) and just bought a Canondale R1000 which I wrecked a few weeks ago. After getting it put back together at the LBS (sportsbasement) I need to get fitted again.

I was originally fitted by my old roomate who works in the industry and he got me a REALLY sweet deal on the bike and I don’t want to go back to him and tell him I crashed it 2 weeks after he built it for me.

Anyone have any pointers on who locally does the best job, and what if anything I should look for when getting a good fitting.

Gracias.

I would go to Krag Rassmussen at Transition Sports in Oakland. He’s FIST certified and knows what he’s doing. Good guy too.

Good luck. Get in touch with Phil Casanta. i think you can find him at hypercatracing.com.

Road bike fit? One of the best in the area is way out in Dublin. Chuck at Livermore Cyclery Dublin. You can take Bart to Dublin/Pleasanton and ride a couple miles to the shop if you don’t want to drive.

Transition Sports (Oakland) - I was very unsatisfied with the fitting I received

PK Racing (Fairfax) - IMHO the best fitter in N. CA

You could also contact Scott Saifer at Wenzel Coaching. He does many fittings in the Bay Area. www.wenzelcoaching.com

If you’re in the north bay, Nor Cal Bike Sport in Santa Rosa (707 573 0112) does a pretty good job. ask for Bob.

You got 3 good recomendations that I have had personal experance with.

Chuck at Livermore Cyclery Dublin Fit me on my road bike with C2’s. Liked him a lot.

Krag Rassmussen at Transition Sports. Did the pre fit at TS and I bought a QR Caliente from him.

Phil Casanta, Also works at Transition sports as well and his own coaching and fitting service. He did the fitting for me when I picked up my Caliente from Transition sports. I haven’t had the need to adjust a thing on the bike through 3 sprints, 2 half IM’s and an IM. Fits like a glove.

I second PKRacing. Christopher Kautz, who occasionally posts to this forum does a fine job. I live in Oregon, but went down there to get fit, because I wanted the best.

Getting a proper fit can be expensive, but ultimately it’s going to be worth it. It’s a heck of a lot cheaper than that pricey disk wheel, and it will gain you more performance.

Thanks everyone. PK Racing certainly looks like a pretty professional outfit! Lots of very useful information on their website too.

A quick cost/benefit analysis…I paid less than $1,000 for the bike new, and I guess I’d feel a bit strange paying a large chunk of change getting fitted for a “cheap” beginner bike…I’m still in the shock phase at how much this damn sport costs.

Is there a noticable benefit for a novice cyclist getting fitted by folks who have fitted Peter Reid? I guess I don’t want to look like a fool driving my VW Bug to the Ferrari dealership for a tuneup.

(all assuming that PK Racing is more expensive than the LBS)

If you are near PK Racing then consider yourself lucky. I recommend them based on what I know about them.

The cost of the bike is irrelevant, because it’s the engine that’s gonna make it go.

Christopher Kautz is your man, because he’ll hook your engine to your wheels in the most efficient way possible. He’s fitted both of my bikes, and the man is a genius. He doesn’t charge nearly what he’s worth.

Thanks Elwood,

I think I know what I’m gonna get myself for Christmas.

i looked at pkracing.com and can’t seem to get an estimate of what a bike fit costs. any rough estimate?

Last time was $300. You get a lot for that.
