Bike fit article - yet another?

While I agree Dan’s fit article is the most complete text on bike fitting that is publicly available, it still leaves me with one huge question. What size frame do I buy? I understand and can create the in air fit points described, but where do I pull the information for determining the best frame size to begin with? Fitting to points in space, leaves a huge window for error (or not depending on your viewpoint) as to what is “the best” frame size for that rider. Is there a set of gross measurements used to determine this? It seems to me that there needs to be a pre-basic bike fit article. Would you use a fit-cycle or the like to measure from the hip to the vertical arm to determine the proper cockpit length? Did I miss something in the article? Thoughts?
