I have a Giant TCR Hybrid (Aluminum frame with carbon fork and carbon rear triangle) that is making a creaking/clicking type sound. It sounds like it is coming from around the BB. It makes it while I am pedaling and gets worse when I pedal over rough roads. At times it sounds like a Geiger counter and it is very annoying. Is it some something with the BB or could it be a problem were the carbon rear attaches to the aluminum frame?
Does it do it when you stand? I had a similar problem once that turned out to be a problem with the seat. The seat rail attachment to the seat broke! I too thought it was the bottom bracket.
edit: Obviously, it did not make the noise when I stood and pedaled.
It is most likely the bottom bracket. I have experienced it several times over the years and it was the bottom bracket every time but once (loose crank arm). My old bike (also a Giant) did not have a drain hole at the bottom bracket and water would traverse down the seatpost (from washing the bike) and destroy the bearings. It took 3 bottom brackets in about 15 mos. to discover the source of the problem.
Unless you have crashed, I doubt that the carbon triangle is the source.
“You know you are getting old when you see your father in the mirror.” anon.
pull yor seatpost, apply a light coat of grease and re-insert it to the same height (possibly lower?!?!), then do it to your seat rails at the seatpost head, then the bottom bracket spindle, then the pedal axels where they screw into the crank arms, get the idea?
Roadies and bike mechanics are all subject to some strange malady that requires them to always check their bikes to ensure they operate in the wisper mode.
Prevention is the key to avoiding a mechanical failure.
