I’ll bite…
this was my longest race ever, and second tri of the season… riding a red cervelo soloist, blue tri top/shorts, blue race wheels and black cast on left arm.
I broke my wrist two weeks earlier in a bike crash, so wasn’t expecting my swim to be great… but as it turned out the long swims i’ve been doing with the cast worked out…
lacked a bit of my power, but was still very happy with it all things considered (No wetsuit/cast)… total time - 2k - 29mid with T1
Bike - also longest non-drafting leg - usually 30k non drafting, but had an awsome ride, had to borrow some race wheels/aerobars, and have been playing around with my position for the past two weeks trying to get comfortable, but finally nailed it, and settled into a groove right away and just went - I had only done two weeks of tempo/LT work, everything else this season has been group rides or just distance. (total time - 56k - 1.30.51 with T2)
Run- well, I’ve really been working on my run this year, but i simply couldn’t put it togeather this year. I was planning on running 3.50/km and was on pace till about the 10k mark (3k in 11.35, 5k in 19.05 or so, 10k in 38mid) but then imploaded, and the last 5k (23 or 24 min) was a simple suffer fest with 3 or 4 people passing me.
My dad did the SC race, and i almost ended up catching him at the line, but he beat me by about 5sec… he went ~2 hours starting at 9am, i went ~3 hours starting at 8 am… so i got a pretty cool picture of us both finishing.
After, painful, my legs were shot and i couldn’t walk for a bit, sitting was key along with lots of fluids…
I think my nutrition was a bit off - should have had 2 bars on the bike and maybe a gel (i had 1 1/2 vector bars), and then take in more water on the run.
finished 6th overall LC, 1st AG (20-24), and won the sissy swim award (fastest non-wetsuit swim)
I will preface this by I am a participant not a competitor second year under 2 hours. I had to take it easy on my knee on the bike/run and no I cannot swim very well (yet)
taper did not go so well.
Wed/50k bike practiced climbing at speed
Thur10/run 5kout ok 5k back sore knee from climbing night before
Friday 60km bike ride with my wife exploring Howe Island as part of our holidays. I want to continue to encourage her to enjoy this sport! She has volunteered in the transition zone at K-town for the past three years. Also did her first ever try a tri in Toronto. What a great race that was!!! I have not had that much fun in the three years I have been doing tri’s. I will be back in Toronto with a few of my friends next year.
i was racked right across from you…the lucky one with number 69 (and no, i didn’t ask for it! LOL) you had a kickass race! i’m sure everyone avoided you at the start - wouldn’t want to get clonked with that cast!
i had a good day considering i trained thru it again. my T1 was the worst ever. that’ll happen when your friend passes out at your feet :-\ (he was ok and went on to have a fine day). i was happy to have the backwards wind on the bike, finished up with a run PB, overall PB and because the chicks in my AG are silly fast and went 1 & 2 overall, i got bumped up to 2nd in the AG.
i like this race so much i’ll probably break my rule for next year of not doing races i’ve done before for it.
its too bad we didn’t organize a slowtwitch meet and greet…
whats your next tri?
I’m down for the thousand islands in brockville, and i’ll have my cast off by then!
My race went well…enough. My swim was worse than usual, which is quite mediocre at best, but the bike and run were pretty strong. I knew who my competition was in the a.g. (M55-59), and he passed me at km3 of the run. I caught him at 4km, he caught me at 5km and sat on my shoulder until 8km…and then he was going, going, gone. So I settled for 2/7 a.g.
Next up on the schedule is 1000 Islands, but I might bag it and just focus on The Canadian full iron. K-Town was my ridiculously 8th race of the season (sprint du, sprint tri, 4 olys, 1/2IM, K-Town), and I’m feeling the cumulative effect a bit.
David - congrats on your race AND the award for…what was it - “Sissy Wetsuit Award”? Gutsy performance!
just played a round of email tag with Andy…says he is doing well…hooked him up with the fine people at Rudy Project so he can recount his story. First race on the Falcon disc I sold him last year…apparently the speed was too great for him to handle…lol.
Any Sters going to be in Cobourg in a few weeks? I’m in and might need a place to crash (sleep…not actually crash) if someone has one.
Sissy Suit award…
i don’t understand why fastest non-wetsuit swimmer gets it… seems like the fastest swimmer in a wetsuit (sissy suit according to swimmers) should get it…
Ya, I’ll be at thousand islands race…
if yours going email me and we can organize a slowtwitch get togeather
I had a pretty solid race at K-Town. I’ve been trying to implement base and speed at the same time since my winter and early spring were messed up with injuries. I ended up 5th overall in the long course and finally felt like I could run after riding again. What a radical change from 3 weeks ago when I suffered through the half in Peterborough. Only 5 or 6 more pounds to drop and I’ll be ready to really hammer.
Interesting to read everyone’s experiences. For me, I had a great race. Not necessarily in terms of overall time but I felt strong and happy all day (a sincere thank you for whoever was responsible for dropping the humidex). It was my first time going that long and I was still experimenting a bit with using gels and energy drinks.
I was pleased with my wetsuit aided swim, hitting the watch out of the water at 30 minutes and change. After a slowish transition, the bike felt great and the tailwind back to town was a wonderful boost heading into the run, pushing my average speed comfortably over 30km. As for the run, I felt okay lurching steadily along at close to 5min/km. Slight blister started at the turnaround but no problem keeping up my pace. Shot of Expresso Hammergel really picked me up for the last section after Her Majesty’s hotel. Missed my “best case scenario” time of 3:30 but hey, apparently I got the fat guy under forty award.
I saw lots of friendly competitors on the course (I also saw cerveloguy but was too intimidated by his mirrored shades to say hello). I’ll probably do the Canadian half iron in Ottawa to finish my season. I hope it has a similar vibe.
I met Cerveloguy and his wife at an OAT officials clinic and since then at a couple of tri’s. Genuinely nice couple. Don’t ever be intimidated to approach anyone. We are all in this together, to have fun at and promote what we love to do.
There was another minor crash coming out of transition, happened right in front of me…Two duathletes, both trying to clip in after the first run. Both went down, neither injured, but the young woman blew a rear tire as a result. To her credit, she rode half the course on a flat, then got a tube at the turn, changed it, and still ended up winning her age group.
I also had a car cut in front of me at the bike turn, disregarding the instructions of the volunteer to let me finish my turnaround first. Caused me to have to go off the road, but the turn was so tight that my speed (relative) was reduced and it was no problem.
K-town is a great race. It was good reading some of the human interest stories in this thread.
Yes it was me looking ahead on that final straight and seeing you I thought “Holy Sh%#, that guy has a cast on his arm and he still smoked me on the swim and bike”. Your race was very impressive considering that extra weight you had to carry on your arm.
