Bike Course Observations

After way too much time lurking on this forum, I began to get the impression that the material of choice is carbon, carbon, and more carbon. In the local sprint tri I had the opposite experience. While this is a “local” sprint, this is Florida after all and there are quite a few very fast and experienced guys out there.

I barely saw any carbon rigs, but saw much more titanium than I expected. I was in wave 1, the 34 and under mens wave. Wave 2 was 35+ men. When the fast guys from the second wave started passing me, it was like a titanium parade. Litespeed, Merlin, QR. Is it the fact that the “older” guys who can afford the bike that will last a lifetime think titanium fits that bill, or is it something more? Have they not bought into the hype? The only carbon bikes I saw in transition were Trek road bikes. I saw no P3C’s, Luceros, Trek TT’s. Alot of titanium and Cervelos though. Interesting.

and website forums tend to be a younger crowd
