Last year at Louisville, I brought my pump to the bike on Sunday morning and it was a pain in the ass. (giving pump to wife) If I pump up my tires on sat before mandatory bike check in, will the air pressure still be high enough when I come to T1? I running new H3 and continental race tubes if it makes a difference.
I know there will be others in transition with pumps, but I have to use that crack pipe thing and most people dont have it. Thanks
It’s very dependent on your tubes, but they’ll probably be just fine. I don’t know about your “race tubes” specifically (I use regular Conti tubes in my training wheels and will go several weeks without bothering to air up in between rides), but I do know that my Gommitalia 'cross tubies lose air pretty quickly.
The race is a ways off. Why don’t you air up your tyres and see what pressure they have 24hrs later?
My tubes are always pumped up to 115 psi (this is where my model of tire was supposed to have the lowest rolling resistance), and 24 hours and one ride later, they’re almost always around 88-90. Granted, you use significantly different tubes (probably heavier than mine), but I know that my tubulars (Zipp/Vittoria tangentes) are down about the same overnight.
Screw this presta/schraeder adapter on to the end of you presta valve and any pump will work without the crack pipe. Most bike shops have them in a jar at the counter. :
My clinchers hold air well and will definitely still be in the zone after a day or two. My tubulars are a completely different story, I have to pump them before every ride. But some tubulars hold air better than others.
I’m not clear on whether you’re talking about the tubes in clinchers or tubular tires.
They have even started to have volunteer pumpers at the races so I wouldn’t worry about finding air the morning of the race. I like to call them fluffers, but that’s a different conversation. I use Zipp Tangentes and only pump them to about 80 PSI the night before. Partly because the tires are porous and lose air anyway and partly because I’m paranoid about them being maxed out a having a stray gull graze the tire and because the tire has just enough pressure, it explodes killing the bird and causing an unsightly mess in transition.

Why do you need to give your pump to your wife? Every race I have ever done where you leave your bike overnight I have my pump in transition the whole time.

Cannot leave anything by your bike in IM races, therefore you’d have to put the pump with your dry clothes bag in the morning. At IMC, they said not to do this. But I saw several people who did anyway. We took a pump in and had an agreed upon meeting place to get rid of it after we aired up race morning. Worked pretty well.
Just borrow someone else’s pump, there will be loads around.
I hate that guy and his six buddies that screw up my warmup on race day.
If a pump is such a pain and you only need to top up, get a CO2 unit that has a gauge and good control. I am pretty sure that the make them for motor cycles. Check Ravx master x mini g co2 inflator. It will fit in your dry clothes bag.
I was speaking more in general for day before check in. If I had to loan my pump to 6 people at IMLou the way that I have at other races, it would have cost me half a mile in the start line…

You don’t take your crack pipe with you during the race. What happens if you get a flat during the race?
