Bike cameras

I am beginning to think that a camera posted front and back on my bike would be a good idea. Something that is small, would loop, have good battery (8+hr rides), and stop if I wreck or manually stop it. I remember a kickstarter project for one about a year ago, but I don’t remember the name of it. It’s possible there are others out there now. What’s out there at this point?

Fly6 for a rear camera:

.

My guess is you are thinking of the Rideye (for front), which is in production and near distribution and you can pre-order.

As mentioned above the Fly6 is a good rear-mount option (I just got one delivered but have only used it on one ride so far).

Thanks! Those are good ones. The Fly6 is short on battery life, but it’s better than what I have now (nothing).
I wonder if both units mount well on a tri bike with aerobars and rear hydration?

What about the new GoPro Hero (no number) I heard it is like $140ish. Not the most aero/integrated solution but might get you there.

The Rideye has GoPro mounts available, so there are many mounting options available.

I actually have a GoPro, I’ve never really gotten to know it, I find it frustrating, and I don’t know if it will loop like I want.

I have thought about getting a (rear) bike camera myself, but I can’t figure out how it would actually make my rides any safer- I doubt any motorist actually notices a camera and changes their behavior. Thus it seems like the camera footage would only potentially be useful for trying to hold someone accountable after an injury. There might be some value to accountability, but seemingly minimal compared to one’s health- or am I missing something?

And of course there are other reasons to have a bike camera beyond safety.

It’s not going to affect your injuries in an accident, or directly affect your risk of an accident, so there’s no reason to compare the benefit against a benefit to health, just ask yourself how much accountability is worth to you. I’d say accountability can be worth a lot in the event of serious injury. Remember that an accident doesn’t have to actually be your fault to be deemed your fault for liability purposes, if you can’t prove what happened. Cyclists can cause serious injuries to other people, including death if a pedestrian or another cyclist falls and hits their head after a collision, for example. Or if you are involved in a collision like this one:

you might feel better if this results from it:

rather than just being left with your injuries.

The fly6 only has a 5 hr run time. Anything like the fly 6 but has a longer running time?

I’ll be watching this thread. Yesterday’s ride marked the third time this season I’ve nearly been clipped by a car.

Apparently, the fly6 will be coming out with a new version with a considerably longer run time. I think this fall.

That’s good information.

I too want a set up - front and rear. **Will anyone please post some pictures of a camera mounted on your bike? **
I just read the Rideye threadhttp://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=5349895;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread and it has me thinking about it or Go Pro - any thoughts about either one?

Thanks very much,
John

I received my new Fly6 last week, people who pre-ordered are having theirs sent currently. I haven’t used it yet so can’t comment on a better battery life (States up to 6 hours so probably similar to earlier version) however it is smaller and much brighter.
