I think there was a thread about this a while back but I can’t find it. Anyway, I have built up two bikes from scratch and both times I wound up having to take things apart because I put components on in a stupid order. What components do the good mechanics out there put on first, second third etc.? I’m building a mountain bike this time around if that matters.
I’m sure there are some tricks and preferences out there, but http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/assembly.shtml has got me through the process. Good luck.

Every good bike mechanic has a method to their madness. I have a ritual, or a process that I follow. Time has provided the means to tune this process and allowes for me to have a 100% Ironman no problem record. Even with bike building and repairing, you need to do it more than a few times and then keep with your newley developed plan.
First - install seatpost so you can hold the frame in a workstand.
Second - install bottom bracket
Third - install headset
Fourth - install fork
After that it doesn’t matter too much. The chain or bar tape should probably be the last thing you add.
