UCLA was the first team that came to mind, though looking back I guess it was more mid-60’s. 10 titles in 12 years in the 60/70’s. Haven’t won a title since 1995 and no elite eight games in the past 11 years. But it looks like they did have a solid run with 3 straight final 4’s from 2006-2008

Disagree on both, especially IU. As a Hoosier I’d love to romanticize about the Bobby Knight era and the lack of success since (and there has been at the championship level), but a Sweet 16 every 4 years or so since Bobby got the boot (and putting aside Y1 after he left, the next 4-5 years were disasters), is more than most other D1 teams could wish for. Are they an elite program anymore? No. But they aren’t a disaster like the first three listed.

Didn’t really pick one , was just pointing out about St. John’s. As to GT, being a good team in a very strong ACC conference, makes them my pick, unfairly or unfortunately to them.

Going back a little further (67-70) and maybe more of a “flash in the pan” sort of basketball programs, but the following were big news for a couple of years back then.

St. Bonaventure with Bob Lanier
Jacksonville University (J U can do!) with Artis Gilmore

DePaul used to be great and have sucked for 20 years. Northwestern has the whole academic handicap and isn’t Duke. U of I is just a pathetic dumpster fire.

Georgetown definitely reached the highest of the three, and has done nothing much in recent years. But DePaul was perennially highly touted back then and even did OK in NCAA tournament a few times from late 1970s to 1992. They also tanked dramatically in some tournaments. But since 1992 they have made the NCAA tournament only twice, so that puts them in the category of a dumpster fire that you only vaguely remember. So give them the nod for this one. Even back in their heyday, they seemed more powerful than they were because they’d run up a gaudy regular season record by virtue of being an independent. But the depths they are now mired (or is it Meyer-ed) in are profound.
St Johns was “solid” mostly by virtue of being in the Big East. The NCAA tournament proved them out, because they won more than one NCAA tournament game only 4 times between 1970 and 2000. Independent DePaul did better and fell further.
UCLA was definitely highest but as soon as Wooden left in 1975 (prior to Windy’s starting point), it went downhill for them despite a couple of good runs in mid 90s and mid 00s. Living in SoCal I’ve always laughed about how people tend to hold inflated opinions about how good UCLA will be in any given season. Kind of like fans of Mexico and England in the run-up to every World Cup.
