According some super smart gal in the UK, the over use of antibiotics and superbugs could kill up to 10 million a people a year and doom humanity before Climate Change.

This makes logical sense as antibiotics are dolled out like candy any time you go to the doctor and at some point, there will be a bug that won’t respond. If that happens, its back to the dark ages of plague, and death from a staph infection.

In the grand scheme of things nature may find a way to curb our population be it from climate changing, super bugs, or some other mass calamity.

Thankful I haven’t had an antibiotic in over 20 years and haven’t been to a doctor in the last 15. No physical, no shots, no meds, no nothing. Staying thin and staying away from doctors and hospitals has done me well.

I didn’t want to get off topic but yes that bugs me too. If any large bodied species is going to survive it, it’s going to be us since we can adapt rapidly due to culture, where other species have to rely largely on evolution to adapt. I don’t find the sky is falling approach to spur people to change very useful.

completely agree. The tens years of life left on earth stuff recently had me laughing.

I do think antibiotic resistance is a big issue as I would not like to see millions die from once easily treated infections.

It’s a good reason to avoid hospitals unless absolutely necessary.

Well were finding out what scumbags live in the pharma industry with opioids. Is it really any surprise that they would push antibiotics as well? I guarantee you that people are making lots of money off of these drugs.

How is that any different than the prior 5,000 years?

I can believe it.

In 2015, I got a small cut on my toe. It became infected,and the infection spread quite rapidly. I went to a doctor who prescribed antibiotics. The antibiotics seemed to start working… Kind of… Then the infection once again spread rapidly. My toe was red and swollen one day, the next day my foot had swollen considerably in size, was oozing puss, smelling like death etc.

I went to the emergency, and despite a packed waiting room I was seen immediately. I was on IV antibiotics for a week. The doctor said I nearly lost my foot, and that he is seeing more infections that typical antibiotics just aren’t knocking out.

I was a healthy, fit, thin, non-drinker/smoker in my early 30’s, and almost lost my foot to a basic infection in a matter of days. I would imagine for a young baby or elderly person an infection like that could do some real damage.

Even though both the US and USSR pursued biological weapons after WW2, neither really did so in earnest and both had a “gentleman’s” agreement in place as early as 1958 because both parties understood the limited tactical value and that the risks from an accident or rogue actor far outweighed the value of the weapon whereas nuclear weapons had the complete opposite attributes.

For a biological weapon to be effective it needs to be airborne and dispersed from multiple points in an area with a high population density and significant transit infrastructure… and preferably in the summer.

I dunno. From both a tactical and strategic viewpoint, an actor could develop both a virulent bio-weapon and a vaccine.

Stockpile the vaccine.
Deploy the weapon at a few geographically favorable airports.
Vaccinate “your side”.
Leverage your vaccine to protect whomever you want on terms you dictate.

Granted, this strategy may work best for actors who want to see much of the world burn, but there appears to be no shortage of them.

Such a strategy assumes that a small state (let’s say Iran or North Korea) would hope they could “pull one over” on the U.S. As soon as a nuclear power such as the U.S. traced the source you can be assured that there would be reprisals (mushroom clouds can be delivered anywhere on earth in 15-30 minutes) and the smaller states know that. Again, this is one of the reasons biological weapons really aren’t that appealing to state actors.

I think that big-state nuclear deterrents against small states are (presumably) effective against just about anything heinous they might do, not just bio-weapons. Such a bio weapon is not a counter for a nuke. (Though it may be, or soon be, in easier reach than a nuke for some small states…)

It’s actually the opposite. There’s little if any money to be made currently in antibiotics. It’s a loser for pharma. That’s part of the problem.

If you have a healthy immune system, there’s probably little to worry about when going in to a hospital. The danger is to those who have a compromised immune system or open wounds/sores.

A much more reasonable, well-reasoned, and less alarming take is the book Superbugs. There’s reason to be very concerned, and the worst-case scenario. Is a nightmare, but there’s also good reason to be optimistic.

Yeah I think antibiotics are overall a fantastic addition to life. Superbug worry is theoretically valid but seems to disregard that we, collectively, will keep working to find the next needed step to protect ourselves. So I agree the big worry is manufactured viral attacks executed by bad actors.

My baseline understand is we have about ~50k years left due to statistical expectancy of atmosphere changing underwater volcano or meteor to ocean. So we should just wait it out and enjoy.

The concern is that the market for new antibiotics and other treatments appears broken. The profit is in medications that are needed by a large number of people and need to be used for extended periods if not a lifetime. An example may be blood pressure medications: once you need them, you probably need them daily for the rest of your life. Antibiotics and other treatments for bacterial infections may only be effective for a few years, not long enough to justify the research, development, and regulatory costs. In a way, they’re like research into orphan diseases, except that there’s a much larger public benefit.

This may be one area where a market solution alone isn’t enough.
