Met him in Vegas he was a bit of an a hole, not that I had anything of value to say to him. But hey he throws down on the bike course, and I have trouble with running to. Solid athlete but not the nicest guy.
Chris is a good guy. I know everyone expects these athletes to be on point 100% of the time, but we all have our moments. Days before a world championship event, these athletes are extremely focused…they are human and you may not get there full attention, which might not come across all that well. Believe me, guys like Chris aren’t walking around purposely being a-holes and would probably be pretty upset that they came across that way.
I am with Mat. I have had the good fortune to train with Chris on several occasions. Great guy, well intended, totally family guy and definitely doing MoreThanSport. People may bag on him, but really how many people on this board can say 9hrs is a bad day.
on a more serious note. While in Hawaii I bought a raffle ticket for More Than Sport. I had the great opportunity while doing that to talk to a young kid who spoke so highly of Chris, how his commitment to the island community (he lived there for most of the year) and his approach to sport inspired him to get out of, what he termed “very unfortunate circumstances and some poor choices…”
This young lad is now running. Volounteering at the race and within the community and living what he called “a clean life”.
He and I shared what we have in common in what I call “our past life”. This kid inspired me that day. And we agreed, shook hands that the only thing we own 100% ourselves and no one can take away from us, are our “choices”. We talked and agreed to keep moving forward, he will stay in school and stay in sport.
That a really good afternoon for me on the island. Provided by Chris Lieto’s approach to sport.
I saw Chris last year at the Ironman Vineman 70.3. He was not an a-hole. Specially considering he was probably exhausted from competing.
He was very nice and patient. I’m sure i came off as an overly eager grouppie, but what can i say, i look up to the guy.
I wish his foundation would let me raise money for events other than full ironman events. I have olympics and the vineman 70.3 scheduled for next year, but it will be a while before i move to longer distances.
