The Lunatic in Chief has been squaring off in a battle with California, 13 other states and some car companies over fuel consumption regulations. Oddly, the car companies seem to be siding with more regulations.
The White House, blindsided by a pact between California and four automakers to oppose President Trump’s auto emissions rollbacks, has mounted an effort to prevent any more companies from joining the other side.
Toyota, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors were all summoned by a senior Trump adviser to a White House meeting last month where he pressed them to stand by the president’s own initiative, according to four people familiar with the talks.
But even as the White House was working to do this, it was losing ground. Yet another company, Mercedes-Benz, is preparing to join the California agreement, according to two people familiar with the German company’s plans.
Mr. Trump, described by three people as enraged by California’s deal, has also demanded that his staffers step up the pace to complete his plan. His proposal, however, is directly at odds with the wishes of many automakers, which fear that the aggressive rollbacks will spark a legal battle between California and the federal government that could split the United States car market.
This is because Trump has zero understanding of the life cycle of the auto industry. When these standards went into effect in 2012, they did so with the support of automakers. Why? B/C the auto industry was already basically there on their next-gen engine development (which is 8-12 years prior to actual vehicle launch).
Rolling back the emission standards isn’t going to do anything—the auto manf aren’t going backwards. Heck, most of them are already on track to roll out their next-next-gen models, most of which will be hybrid/electric.

Actually, the fight is more the World vs Trump and CA is just on the side of the World. Everyone else is working toward the Paris Climate Agreement and the auto manufactures are building toward that future. Trump can walk away from the Paris agreement, but international corporations can’t.

+1. As loath as I am to side with the world most days I am with it 100%. Trump, and most of his cabinet will be quite dead before the harsher effect of Global Warming hit the earth. So they don’t give a shit. You’d think his kids might get it but they must figure $$$ will keep them safe.

I could see California taxing car registrations that don’t meet their proposed emission standards at such ridiculous levels car companies shut down en masse. If CA helps destroy the economy Trump will be the loser here. Quite ironic.

That’s the funny thing is that the car companies are on board with the California regulations and won’t have an issue meeting them.
And now the Justice Department is getting in on the act. An anti-trust investigation into Ford, BMW, Honda and VW. Those would be the 4 companies that originally rebuffed Trump and sided with California.
Why do the Interstate commerce laws that are enacted by the federal government not override the states laws in this area? Has this been challenged in the courts? It seems very unfair to tell a company they can’t sell their product in your state and less it makes your regs
Here’s what I don’t get. Trump can set an National standard. The car companies are basically saying, not only will we meet that national standard, we will be much much better than the standard.

There are all kinds of state laws that prevent sales of certain products unless they comply with state regs. For example, in Texas you can’t sell a car unless it’s through an independent auto dealer. So Tesla’s aren’t sold in Texas because they only sell direct to consumer. They even tried to block Tesla from servicing its cars in Texas.
