If you placed your wedges the way the pictures suggest, wouldn’t the pedal wear into the softer purple plastic?
I replace my cleats about once per year because the pedal wears into the black base plate. I would think the placement suggested in these pictures would necessitate buying new wedges frequently as the pedal wears into them. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Better the wege than your carbon soles. The wear on the center of the wedge does not affect the way it works. You can order a stainless steel plate from Speedplay to protect the carbon soles or the wedges if it is a problem.
Hmmm, I wonder why you don’t get the same wear I do. My baseplate gets wear in a round shape. Eventually the shoes wobble on the pedals (also due to the spring wearing into the silver plate). I just figured the soft wedge material will take a beating if I put them on like the pics. I guess I’ll give it a try.
I also get the round wear pattern that you have seen. I believe that Lemond sells wedges that mount between the shoe sole and the 3-hole mounting plate.
My wife uses Speedplay Zero’s with Lemond LeWedges and I have not noticed any abnormal wear and tear on the shims on her shoe. On the other hand, I see a lot of riders using Speedplay and from behind, with the angle of some riders shoes, I often wonder whether or not they are actually clipped in.
Just slightly OT, but I started using the LeWedges this year and I must say that they really are the bomb, if you are interested in improving your fit, comfort and power transfer at a critical point on the bike. It amazes me that people will spend an insane amount of money for a very expensive bike, and all manner of other fancy bike doo-dads, but then opt to ride in basic $100 or less cycling shoes/pedals!! The LeWedges are what, $25 bucks. Maybe that’s their problem - they are too cheap!!
I did wear through some of my wedges but it took years.
If you get Teflon shims, the float feels freer, like you just lubed the pedal bodies with White Lightening or equivalent. I hardly lube mine anymore. And they protect the LeWedges or the sole of your shoe.
I bought 1/32" PTFE sheet for a few dollars from US Plastics. They’re great and I have them in all my shoes, especially my custom shoes which don’t have wedges b/c the correction is built into the sole. I don’t want the pedals contacting the carbon fiber directly.
