We hear the news reports that Hurricane Flossie is headed your way. Of course, being a 27 year Florida resident, I know the media likes to hype these things. What’s the word out there?
In any event, hoping this one misses you.

There’s a “hurricane watch” in effect (at least as of 11:00 am this morning, HST), which may turn into a “hurricane warning” later today. Main effects are expected to be on the Big Island Tuesday and Tuesday night. It’s currently a category 4 hurricane, but may be weakening; we just need to wait and see what happens over the next 24 hrs. Maximum sustained winds near 140 mph with higher gusts (yikes!–kind of puts the winds around Hawi in perspective). Hopefully it will weaken and we’ll just have lots of rain and some wind.
I’m not on the Big Island, but Oahu is getting prepared if there is such a thing as being prepared. I work at the Queens and can say the emails have started for a disaster planning, and my boss has a meeting today. They aren’t too sure Tues or Wed for it to pass Oahu. I am most concerned about Kauai, as they seem to have the trailerpark and a tornado attraction for the storm to turn north and find them. Thanks everyone for their concern. Hey, if they can have Ironman in an earthquake we can handle a little rain and wind. And if it is only 75mph wind, that is just another day on the Queen K.
Hang in there, literally and figuratively you guys…looks like it has weakened somewhat but likely will still pack a punch:

Holy crap! I was just sitting here reading ST, unpacking my canned goods and bottled water, and we just had another earthquake. Felt just like the one last October. Hope there isn’t any damage. No after shocks (yet?). Yikes!!!
got to kona today for my training trip. not sure what to expect tomorrow but i hope its not too bad. by the way, this place is beautiful. the locals are talking about it hitting the southern most point but it seems that no one is really paying too much attention.
my parents are on the Hilo/volcano side and called around 8pm (I live in Honolulu now) to let me know that they had a pretty decent earthquake. The things we miss here on Oahu… hope the storm turns away or at lease keeps going straight…
What’s the latest news on the hurricane or any aftershocks?
i was in my hotel room last night during the quake. didnt feel it i guess but they said it was a good size. 10am right now over here and the wind isnt too bad. i got 50 in this morning before the winds got too bad. it was great out. the shoulder on the queen k is rediculously smooth. but yeah, i think the winds are supposed to pick up in about an hour.
Thanks for the update, Frankie. I hope it doesn’t get too bad for you or disrupt your training too badly. Keep us posted.
You can always do what Joe does during Hurricanes. He goes out on his bike and simulates hill repeats going up and downwind. Yes, he’s crazy.
Seriously, keep safe all.

alright everyone im about to go for a swim… yes a swim. im sure i can get in a few thou before the water gets too bad. besides its probably good training for the big one.i just hope the hotel doesnt keep us locked up later this evening. anyway ill keep you all posted.
I’m worried about the Green Sand Beach at the southern tip. One of my favorite spots on the island. If there was no danger to my life, I’d love to be running along the coast there today experiencing the wind, the rain, the surf and the awesome power of nature.
My thoughts are with those on the island who may be in danger or suffer damage to their homes or possessions.
I love that beach!!
Hope everyone is OK, especially the Princess.

Doesn’t look too bad right now in Kailua Kona.
I hope everything is well on the BI and I am not so sure I want to go thru another earthquake this year!!
I don’t think i am over the last one yet ![]()
Looks pretty mellow in the Bay right now.
Totally off topic here. ![]()
The family gig around labor day fell thru so wont be coming back to wisco way till maybe next summer. You going out to the BI in October???
The earthquake last night (on the east side of the island, near Hilo/Volcano) was a 5.4; fortunately no damage at all. Flossie is now a Category 2 hurricane (was Category 4 last night). Lots of rain here on the east side, but very little wind. Supposedly the heaviest rain & wind is yet to come in the next few hours, but it doesn’t sound like it will be really bad. We’ll see what happens!
I will be there 10/6 and you??
