we could really put the hammer down on the bike as if there was no tomorrow and still explain our pathetic run split with a casual “hey - i’m 210 pounds, i CAN’T run fast!”
well, that’s over now!
the winner of this years ironman lanzarote Ain-Alar Juhanson is a 6’4" 210 pound guy and ran the marathon sub 3h (2.57 i believe)! just amazing!
we’ll have to learn how this running thing works …
Yeah, this guy is setting the bar pretty high for the big guys. That said, glad to see someone of his size and stature win an IM. I have heard that Lanzarote is one of the harder ones too. There is no such thing as an easy IM, just varying levels of difficulty!
Yep, saw that on race day. Damn! My excuse is now out the window. This guy is huge and picks the freakin’ hardest IM course to race. He’s placed twice before. Runs like a gazelle, allbeit it a very big meaty one that likes to eat. Now, he does train 38 hours per week plus!
I would hardly call this place a sweatshop. It ain’t 9 to 5, but I’ve seen much, much worse. Try Skadden Arps or Jones Day (aka Jones Day Nights & Weekends).
I’ll bet Tom D works more weekly hours than I do.
EDIT
Oh… and thanks for the compliment. I’ve found this place to be fairly unique among law firms. Great lawyers, and for the most part… pretty good people.
Great Race for the big guy. He looks like he’s pretty lean though. He probably would have difficulty trying to find anywhere to lose weight. Not carrying too much weight in his pecs.
I’d guess 210 at 25% BF is quite different than 210 at 6 or 8%.
That being said I’ve always wondered why big people can’t run. Seems to me that big people should have the big muscles and structure in scale to the small people.
I’m sure it’s not a direct comparison but it woudl seem to me that a 8%bf 160lb’r shouldn’t have to much of an advantage over a 200lb’r at the same BF.
In an IM or any other tri it would seem over the distance things should equal out. The big guy is probably putting out more wattage per lb than the little guy adn likely has a longer reach for the swim. The smaller guy probably has the advantage on the run.
I am always skeptical of listed body weights - high or low. Often an athlete’s off season weight is touted the rest of the year as his “body weight” when in fact he weighs much less during race season.
In this case it does not matter as he got the overall win.
I took a cycling “clinic” in which we computed watts/hour output at varying RPM’s. We then compared that with body weight to measure our watts/lb or body mass. I’m 6’5" and a ton faster than my then GF. Her watts/lb put mine to shame. Watt’s/lb body mass seems to be based on strength to weight ratio.
Given that, this guys win seems even more impressive to me…
Looking at that pitcure, I’m trying to find where the 210 pounds are?
Granted pictures are hard to judge, but 6’4 210 pounds at that bodyfat is pretty darn muscular. Just looking at the pic, he looks much more like 185-195 … but that’s nitpicking, for certain.
For example, Terrel Owens is listed at 6’3 226 at comparable BF%. 16 leans pounds of muscle can have a dramatic effect on quality of muscular physique, but TO lloks to be carrying quite a bit more than just 16 pounds of muscle than this guy. Another example, Todd Pickston (a fellow Eagles WR) has a much more comparable build (muscularity + BF%), and Pinkston is listed at 6’3 180.
I’m not saying that the IM dude should try and look like TO … only that (as someone else said) I’d suggest that the 210 is the guy’s off-season weight. Again, this is nitpicking … and I am not trying to slight the IM dude at all. I’m similar size 6’3 192-195 … and I cannot come close to doing what he is doing.
I met Ain-Alar last year in Kona and he is a very nice guy indeed. Very polite and humble and speaks english very well. He is from Estonia, but races often for a team in the UK.
I was very happy for him.

Lets not forget about the lad who won Ironman Canada a few years back, Garett MacFadyen. He’s about 6’2" and pushing 190 when he’s in peak condition. Furthermore, he averaged like 40 km/hr and ran in the 2’40’s when he won… Ouch (he has a horrid swim split for a pro of close to 1:10)
