BIG F-up at hy-vee with timing

No real details yet but it sounds like a large number of people are going to get DQed because they didn’t do two laps on the run course…

Problem is there wasn’t a timing mat to check it. So they are now trying to figure out who actually went around twice and who didn’t. A lot of people are pissed because they know some of these people can’t run that fast and there times are rediculous.

Aka, someone started 12 mins behind me came through to the post race maybe 3-4 mins after i finished but only beat me by two mins. acording to their watch.

This could get real interesting real quick.

Grant

I hope nothing of importance was on the line?

Dave

Ag cash rolled down to 7 deep. The person i was talking about supposedly was in the money for it. So yeah there is a lot of people that could be top three in age group that didn’t do the second loop.

One girl somehow didn’t have a chip at the end of the run and they took her watch time and put it on the unofficial time as winner in the age group.

Another thing was i finished in 2:20, and the swim was long especially after i had to stop and grab my chip as it fell off swim with it in my hand until i could put it down my trisuit. I finally put it down my trisuit and put it back on after the swim. Which gave me a 28 min swim. i biked a 1:02 and ran a 45min 10k. with was 11 or 12th ag.

Looked at the results was something like 17th on the swim, 9th on the bike and then somehow i went down to almost 30th on the run portion. which is hard to believe that almost 20 people that finished behind me had faster run splits.

Wow, sorry to hear about the mess. Yep, when results are messed up.

Now, this has to go back to the RD. They can choose to have mats are various locations to make sure things like this do not happen.
But, it costs money.

Dave

They said they would but it wasn’t there.

Along with mile markers that he said were someone else’s job to put up according to a friend who talked to him.

That would have fixed the whole timing issue because people would have seen the miles.

I don’t know anything about this race, but I would think it’s not that unreasonable to have 30 people run faster than 45 min… unless it was an unusually hot day or very hilly. A 102 bike split for 40k is pretty good for a tri, but a 45 10k is not nearly as good IMO. Was it fun besides the timing problems?

I just got back from the race as well.

I mostly do local triathlons, so this was the first one I have done with that many people entered, put on by a professional group like Premier Event Management.

But is the way all big-time triathlons are run?

The timing problem with the two-loop run section was only one of a number of logistics problems.

I hope nothing of importance was on the line?

Dave

Assuming I have the correct website.

“On June 17, 2007, athletes from around the world will gather in the heart of the American Midwest to compete for the largest prize purse in triathlon history: $700,000.00. Join us for the inaugural Hy-Vee ITU World Cup in Des Moines, Iowa — and be a part of history in the making.”

And then they mess up the timing? I really hope it was a different tri.

Grant, for as many times as they claimed timing matts were going to be at the loops, (at the briefing and at the actual event) I can’t believe they were not put out. On my run which I will admit was way farther back than yours I saw at least 4 people who were getting ready to head to the finish when at the last minute they cut over to do a second lap when volunteers were “reminding” them to do 2 laps. Heck after I finished the 2nd lap I had at least 4 volunteers yelling 2 laps as I was getting ready to finish.

doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me. if they skip a loop, that means they only ran a 5k correct? its pretty easy to tell who ran a 5k and who ran a 10k. and i dont understand your logic as to why there cant be 20 people who you beat that ran faster than you. a 45 min 10k is not fast. I would expect alot of guys to be under that. You probably just biked and swam alot faster than they did, therefore beating them. Ill have to look at results, but if people skipped a loop, their run time would be, at the slowest, 30 minutes. very obvious they didnt do a 10k then.

I think you meant to write back to Cyclone Hodckey and not cyclone tri, but to answer your question if they would have only done 1 lap it would be about 4 mile run, if they didn’t do a lap at all it would be about 3 mile run. Theses are just estimates. The actual loops were at the end of the course after you had already went about 3 miles.

my bad. i see, i was thinking it was two equal loops. I guess it will be harder to tell then…

Man, first, an Rd would not want to make a loop anything. But, if for some reason they have to, spend the extra few dollars
and put the mats out such that you have data to prove if someone did the entire course.

So so easy.

Dave

According to my garmin 305 skipping the 2nd loop would have cut 1.5 miles off of the run.

I hope they get it all figured out, but it reads as if that might be difficult. Would be too bad if this overshadows (and rightfully so) the outstanding production that these guys put on. I thought for an inaugural event, especially with 1700 folks, they did a phenomenal job. Again, unless they screwed up something vital and easy like a timing mat on the looped course.

The guy with the bullhorn asked me twice if I really did do the two laps already. I musta looked like shit.

If it was really only a mile and a half that is going to be really hard to tell. Especially if you are an hour runner. If you are doing 10 min miles and it comes up as a 45 instead an hour it doesn’t look too wierd.

I agree with TeamBarenaked. The overall event was amazing.

The only complaints i have is getting to transition 5 mins before we had to be out because it took 45 mins to go 6 blocks or so. And no mile markers. Also i would have prefered a run in swim start instead of starting at the water since it spreads things out more.

Grant

Grant, my chip almost got lost in the swim also. I stuck it in my shorts for the remainder of the swim. Time for the chip company to invest in new straps.

My only real complaint, and it is not a HUGE deal, but I drove in to downtown to attend the mandatory briefing Saturday, and arrived 6 minutes late. I walked right on in, and the door guards came in & dragged me back out. Would not let me in until the following session an hour later. Not a big deal because there was a bar a block away, but I was still mad that I then had to push back dinner plans with a party of 16 for an hour.

Overall, great event I thought.

ah - they finally put the result up on the site. 8:20pm, local time.

Quite a few folks with 2-hour penalties. I assume those are the folks they determined cut a loop or two? For example, one of them had a 25:40 10K time.

wow, what a big screw up there is some very talented guys from DSM that had huge penalties. I’ll admit it took me a few seconds to digest and realize what the volunteer was saying, “You have to turn right on E 7th street TWICE!” I actually went up the finisher’s chute but it didn’t cost me much time after I realized what he said. Yeah, way confusing. That is too bad for the guys who messed up. I know some of them pretty well and I’m sure they wouldn’t do this intentionally.
