Bringing the family from the midwest out to cali and have a few days before and after the race to see the sites. Thought we’d do the zoo, sea world etc before, then take a road trip after. Looking into a cabin in big bear or elsewhere. Any recommendations for accomodations or activities?
It’s a lot longer of a drive but Yosemite is a life changing experience if you haven’t been there. The drive up 395 from Southern Cal. alone is worth it, but once inside the park everything so so surreal.
Keep in mind that going up 395 you will NOT be able to get to the valley floor and see all the cool stuff there because Tioga Pass is closed for the winter and under about 8 feet of snow.
Big Bear is cool but the snow level is really unpredictable and the roads are beat up so a bike ride is taking your life into your own hands! If you are coming from the midwest perhaps a nice few days in Palm Springs would be enjoyable? There’s lot’s of stuff to do. The tram to Mt. San Jacinto and the hiking trails up there are nice, but may be impacted by snow as well.
If you have little one’s you owe it to them to spend a day at Disneyland if they have never been.
Enjoy your trip.

OH MAN! I totally forgot that 120 won’t be open!
Well it’s still a beautiful and diverse ride up to Yosemite from the west side of the state as well, just not as mountainous. It’s something to look into anyway.
Big Bear should be fun. If you are not going to ski, there is an inner tube lift/run that is quite fun. Lots of decent restaurants there as well, check out Fred and Marys.
