Bicycle Tour

I am considering a self-supported 5 to 7 day tour on my bike as a training tool (near 100 miles per day). I live around Boston and have given thought to a tour of new england versus a ride down the east coast to richmond. I have a friend who used Adventure Cycling’s southern tier transcontinental map, but don’t know anyone who has used the atlantic coast map. Anyone with experience with this or recommendations on other maps or websites for the east coast?

Also, any recommendations on carrying gear. I am a minimalist and will carry a very light load and stay in motels. so i am thinking about a single pannier. Only problem is that I don’t have a touring bike that accepts panniers. Can you put them on a carbon frame that is not set up to do so? Or…trailer rental v. purchase?

Thanks.

I would be very carefull with attaching a trailer to a race bike. The chances of you destroying your frame are quite high as our race bikes are not desigend to deal with that much stress on the rear triangle. If you are thinking of a very minimalist trip then I would suggest you find a clip-on rear pannier that you attach to your seatpost.Combine that with a small backpack and you are good to go.
