I am currently dealing with a constant pain in my right hamstring area and am curious if anyone else in the forum has experienced a similar pain/ injury and what they have done to alleviate it.
I have been dealing with it since December 2008, but I just kept thinking that it would go away. It has not alleviated, despite rest and recovery time. I did not know what could be causing it until I read an article in Triathlete magazine a few weeks ago on Sacroiliac Joint Syndrome. I thought that that might be the culprit since the pain originated in my right glute, ran down the back of my leg and terminated at the outside of my right knee. Investigating further I think the problem may lie in my biceps femoris muscle; which seems to follow the exact path which I am experiencing pain.
I first noticed it after I ran an Olympic duathlon in December 2008. During the race, my hamstrings were cramping considerably, but I did not notice this reoccurring pain until the drive home. Driving home, I had a constant, dull ache from the sit bone, down the back of my leg, to the outside of my knee, punctuated by occasional sharp pains throughout.
I did not race again until April 2009, but since then I have noticed it after every race. During the race has not been a problem, but driving home is miserable. The area will ache constantly with occasional sharp pains throughout. I have found some alleviation for the drive by rolling up a towel and wedging it under my right leg, where the leg meets the butt.
If I’m in the car for more than an hour, getting out and straightening my right leg is very painful.
I experience no pain in any range of motion or lack of flexibility.
I strength train regularly and haven’t noticed any decrease in leg strength because of this.
The pain used to ebb and flow, but over the past month it has become stronger and constant. I did an Olympic Tri this past weekend and experience pain in the region DURING the race for the first time. Time and money have been constraints on seeing anyone about it at this point, but I am at the point that I cannot ignore it anymore.
Has anyone else experience similar symptoms? Is this something I should see a doctor, physical therapist, massage therapist or chiropractor about?
Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
You’ve had constant pain for almost a year, and you have to ask on an internet forum if you should go see a doctor?
Yes, go see a doc.
John
Sounds like what I had and I kept letting it go until it culminated in surgery and a long recovery.
Mine was similar; started in the butt and then down the hammie to the back of knee area around the tendons back there. Mine started on one side but slowly began to show the same symptons on the other.
Finally after going to Drs. and several diagnosis including bicep femoris issues, SI joint and tenndonitis, I was able toget into an MRI where it was seen that I had some stenosis and an abutting of S1 nerve at L4/L5 (I think thats what it was). I had ruined myself to the point where the physio was not helping and I ended up having a laminectomy and discectomy. No pain in the legs any more but I had 6 months away from swimming, running and biking and gained a lot of weight and ended back at square one.
So go to a sports dr and save a lot recoup and base training.
I’m not asking IF I should see a doctor, I’m asking WHO I should go see. Time and money are tight and that is why I am asking if anyone else has experieced the same thing so I can see the right health care provider the first time around.
But thank you for taking the time to provide the snide reply.
Slow Triathlete,
Thank you for the response. I’ll try and find a reputable sports doc in my area and see what his/her diagnosis is.
Thanks again!
I would attempt to get a MRI as soon as you can to determine the damage. Do this through a reputable sports dr, preferably a triathlete if possible. Depending on results of the MRI he would send you to physio first and then from there possibly shots and surgery.
Good luck…hopefully all it will be is SI joint or something like that…lots of core work.
