Bi-Pods for Rifles

So from what I read, I should get a Harris. This is for AR-15. what length legs should I buy? 6-9in 9-12 in? is that the leg length or how far the rifle sits above the bench/ground? I would be using this for bench / prone shooting. I normally use a sandbag up front that sits about 8 inches high so I can put in a 20 round mag.

AR 6 to 9, and that is leg length. so you get a little more height. My sniper, I mean precision rifle has a 9 - 12 on a 24 inch barrel. For an AR 6-9 works well with a 18 - 20 inch barrel. Bipods on 16 inch or less (SBR) are just odd since those are for close engagements.

A special forces buddy of mine said save the coin, get a Caldwell, when I was in the market. They are identical. it doesn’t have the swivel point, but you don’t need that unless you are precision shooting multiple targets. The harris is a little lighter.

You should consider one of these to.

Like Forgie, I have a snip … ah … precision rifle with a 9-13 on a 24 inch barrel. I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/...s=harris+bipod+s-brm

I also have this 6-9 Harris on my AR 10: http://www.amazon.com/...s=harris+bipod+s-brm

Which AR 10 did you get, Armalite? I am looking at these too.

Looks great. But first I want to get a .308 in a Remington 700P or 5R. I not sure if the 5R is worth the extra money. Both the 700P and 5R are supposed to be great shooters out of the box.

My precision rifle is the Tikka T3 Tac. Absolutely love this rifle. http://www.tikka.fi/t3models.php?tac

On it, I mounted a Bushnell Yardage Pro Rangefinder Scope. http://www.bushnell.com/hunting/laser-rangefinders/yardage-pro-riflescopec

Almost shoots itself!

Mine is a savage 10fp with heavy barrel. Bushnell elite with mil-dots. My uncle taught me how to use mil-dots when I was younger and never felt right with a bdc reticle. Not quite as versitile in adverse conditions. Maybe if I had a ar-15 in SPR config.

 What no 20 and even 24 inch barrel? 16 inch in a .308 is travesty. If it were at least 20 I’d buy it yesterday.

Ah, they have another series with longer barrels. There are number of 16 in 308 rifles (SCAR 17 for example).

Here are the longer barrels: http://www.bushmaster.com/firearms/hunting.asp

I have a Ruger M77 Varmit/Target rifle in 22-250 with a bull barrel that I’ve put a Blackhawk 6-9" bipod on it. Also have a 9-13" but I prefer the shorter of the 2. It’s an absolute tack driving rifle and regularly make 400 yard shots on prairie dogs with it. I’m still looking for something that will reach out regularly with a heavier caliber but have fallen in love with this rifle.
The Blackhawk bipods are well built and have the swivel built into them. The taller I don’t care for as much as there is some flex in the legs and the shooting height seems awkward. They are fairly inexpensive and locally made so I’m pretty happy with them.

Also have a couple of Bushmaster AR’s that I swap the bipod onto once in a while. One is set up for longer range shooting and the other I put an EOTech holographic on it for shorter range targets. Both are a blast to shoot.

The muzzle flash on a 16 inch .308 has to be amazing. And a lot of energy lost, but it does knock em down unlike the 5.56. I always preferred .308 in 20 in an battle rifle config, but the paratrooper FALs in 18 are pretty good to.

The muzzle flash is not that bad. You use a 16" .308 for situations in which you would use a 16" 5.56, but, want more knock-down power. See, e.g., SCAR 17s. They serve a purpose. If I only had one .308, it would not be in 16". But, my 16" .308 is not my long(ish) distance shooter.

The .308 bolt actions I am looking at are 24 and 26 inch barrels. I am looking at the Remington 700 Police and the 700 5R. My local gun shop is pushing the 5R, but it is about $300 more than the Police version and I am not sure it is that much better. Both get good reviews.

Interesting article on 16" barrel’ed 308s… http://rifleshooter.com/2013/11/super-short-precision-rifles-a-16-5-308-tactical-bolt-action-rifle/

I’m using a 20" Savage 10FP with a Vortex HS-T 6-24x50 with VMR reticle (mil-hash)… I can’t decide if I want to put it in a MST LSS chassis or a conventional wood/fg stock… or get a .22 caliber gun that’s easier on the shoulder/ears.

Interestingly NTOA MOA standards are much more stringent than Military. Military is about killing a target, who cares if there is collateral damage. Police have the risk of killing the innocent. I’ve found precision rifles specifically designed for Police Agencies have a tighter action. Don’t know if that is a standard rule of thumb, just my observation. I can’t shoot ammo reloaded form a semi-auto in my Savage 10FP. I mean I can, but I have to jam the sucker in there, and that isn’t a good idea. I took the measurements and they are so insignificant, yet the chamber of that rifle is so tight. Then again, when I took the thing out the first time and centered the scope, I took three shots at 100 yards and thought I missed the second two. When I walked up, I saw a clover shaped hole in the forehead.

Can’t recall the standards, and couldn’t seem to find them.

Damn bunch of shaky handed old men. Get out there and practice you bunch of lazy bastards. You don’t need any stinking bipods, that what you use the bodies of your enemy for. If you happen to be hunting Taun-Tauns they also make good sleeepig bags so it’s a win/win.

Most experts on ballistics suggest that 16in is no problem at all for a .308 unless you are going way out and even then there is a healthy discussion on barrel length. Of course this leads into the discussion of increased vibration of a longer barrel etc. The Scar 17 is an interesting gun simply because there used to be a stereotype that piston systems were inaccurate, but F&N really did a good job designing the gun. A good friend is on a top level spec ops team and said he scar 17 (H, standard-16in) is the best rifle made today. He has extensive marksmanship training through the best schools and he can shoot whatever he wants, he said 9/10 times he grabs the scar 16in. He has video of him nailing 12in targets at 1000-1200m. I think the bolt gun/long barrel myths are slowly dying.
