This is the best of the new punny series! HS swimming state meets are also going on now, I think, too :-). At any rate, lots of tapering now for swimmers developing that lean and hungry look. Such athletes are dangerous!

I got one more vegas swim in, man I love that pool there. Nice big digital clock you can see from both 25yd pools, and almost always a lane to yourself. Think I have decided to do a meet in a couple weeks, a spring pentathlon. So 50 of each stroke and 100IM. So with that in mind, cranked up the speed and got my arms tired!

Back at my shit hot high pool today, about 85/86. Continuing on with sprinting, but taking longer to warm up and cool down with the heat and heavy breathing:

Been plugging along when I can… but travel and kids and sickness have been just brutal from jan until 2 weeks ago.
Been a good 2 weeks now.
5100 yesterday.
More to come today.
Nothing to brag about timewise. Feel is coming back and will see how some speed work goes today.
I need outta this cold and wet here!!! arg… so sick of it

swim 4x400Im 7:45,56,8:03, we draw a veil over the last repeat.
garmin gave 1700yds which is odd, usually I can count 100s.

The rec center has started an adult lap swim class. I applaud the intent, but now the cool pool is entirely full whenever I go. Today it was all women for some reason. I would have asked to share a lane except I don’t want to be that guy. The warm pools was full of literal floaters, would have had to educate on the concept of sharing a lane. Waited patiently…

3600 SCY a little rusty

Back at home pool after 4 days in NYC (no swimming, but some running in Central Park which is awesome)

1000 (14:37)/200K
10x100 on 1:45 (1:20-24)/200K
5x200P on 3:00 (2:37-39)

Special shout out to @Dr_Tigerchik who is facing a difficult shoulder situation. Hoping for the best and we miss your wit and wisdom in this fish thread.

read an auto bio by penny lee deans, bout all her swims in the 70s. they used to train a fuck off insane amount. she did a 36km swim long course average 121 pace (including breaks) leading up to her channel swim.

today did 500-700 or so just warming up shoulders down to holding 30 spl for a few 100s once stretched out. then 2.6km straight with a few ‘strides’ at the end to get groove back.

was going to do an ocean race down south this weekend but they called it off in advance due to surf being big down there the whole week. saturday night the game 1 of the aus basketball league is on so going to that with my family. go hawks! tatum who plays for the celtics, well his dad is coach of the hawks who i am pulling for

Ya some of those distance swimmers do some crazy shit in training. Suppose that is why the race where they do…I’m currently on the opposite end of the spectrum, wondering if I can get some speed increases in a few weeks here. Shit hot pool again today, long warm up and then 16 fast 50’s of various stuff…

4x(3x100buoy or pull@1;40/2x100frog@2;00)buoys(1;27 to 1;20)pulls(1;17 to 1;09)frogs(1;56 to 1;47)

For your speed have you ever done parachute work?
Could build up some power in the top end
Nice set !!

Did my first non drafted 4.5km in one hour today
Off 1:20 cycle no stops. Finish solid with 345 and 458 on 3 and 4, swim through on the time on the 5

Short course meters and a hot pool, headache at the end

So 4.5km in an hour is pretty study, almost 5k SCY. And if that was just workout pace, imagine you could crack that 5k SCY for the hour swim, which would put you in pretty good company in that postal event. You figure you got 5300 in you for that hour??

Hit the low cool pool yesterday and just did my first taper workout. About 2400, good warm up and then some fast 50’s of different stuff, and working on IM turns. Highlight was a 32 flat for 50 fly from a push off. Will get to the hot pool today barring lightening(big storm coming in here for a few days) and just continue to do fast stuff and maybe some starts.

32x50 on 1min, first one 30 flat, then 37-8s.
even got the lane with sunshine coming in from the skylights…

4.5Km under an hour is pretty quick, and mentally tough. I did some 5000 SCY pool swims -50 years ago and one 10K SCY pool swim. Recall as hard to stay focused.

60 days until the bubble comes off and will be swimming outside!

hope your meet goes well.

when i was in the states i was going around on 70 per 100 mostly (swim not interval time) but didnt do any big sets. otherwise was struggling keeping up with my gf. learnt my lesson there - i dont care if you go swim but dont be grumpy when youre tired!!! i find the ‘punch gut’ feeling pretty hard to keep on top of in short course, youve got to be tough to push through that.

if you guys are doing an hour or solid long swim, do you count laps or 100s, or just count it by the clock? eg, 15 or 20 minute increments?

Very rarely do long swims, occasionally will do a 3k straight with dan and sometimes do the postal 3k swim race. But not an hour of course and I use the clock to basically stay on laps. Look just about every 100, and record in my head every 500 and 1000. Sometimes get lost in my thoughts, but easy math to get back on track. If I did a hour worth it would have to be something like 40+x100’s on short rest, that I could handle…

Today back at the hot pool and felt really shit warming up. Did a big kick day to try and get a tiny bit more strength in my legs for those fast 50’s I have this weekend:

2x(3x100buoy@1;40/5x100kick as 1 frog and 4 zoomers flutter)buoys(1;31 to 1;20)zoomers(1;40 to 1;34)zoomers dolphin(1;48 to 1;44)

Figure I should start the posting back up as an example that not everyone interested in partaking in the fish thread needs to be going super long or fast.

Currently coming back from some medical issues that were found last summer. At this point they’ve confirmed treatment is working and they’ve got me pretty much back to baseline. So as a whole I feel pretty incredible most of the time regardless of essentially being at couch potato status physically.

Started swimming last week but the watch ate the dirt and I’m bad at counting so for what’s recorded:

Monday: mix of 50s and 100s at close to 1:40/100y for a total of 1200y
Tuesday: 10x100y at close to 1:40 pace
Wednesday: I like sleep

Probably need to work on slowing the pace down while building some endurance back but longer workouts don’t always mix with appreciation for sleep and swimming pre-work.

Happy to be rejoining all the fishes!

Welcome back Ark, and your paces are not all that bad, at least in comparison to some other old people. Dan had a pretty long layoff and is back at it now, and he is just breaking 1;40 paces for his swims, starting with a 1;50 to 2 minute interval base. Of course if you are 30 years old and an ex D1 swimmer, then you are allowed to wallow…(-;

Wasn’t going to swim today but plumber got out of here in time for me to make the noon session. Hot as usual and felt absolute shit, so just did a long warm up and a few paced stroke 50’s
3x(500buoy or pull @8;00/7;30/7;00)200frog@4;00)buoys(7;38/7;18/pull-6;34)frogs(3;57/48/44)

bet it feels nice to be back in the water, enjoy.

today did main set of 10x100 then 2x100 then 3x100

bucks party tomorrow for a mate, going ‘go-karting’ (dnot know what you guys call it), then hit a few golf balls, then more standard form bucks celebrations no doubt.

Catching up after missing a few days.

I also don’t swim long distances in SCY pool: Did 1hr USMS a few years ago and occasionally a 1500 or 2000: always watch clock every 100 or 200. Helps me keep pace and not lose count. In the lake, I have a 55 minute course I do a couple of times a week in warm weather.
