Better mounting of a profile design aero water bottle

I don’t have one. I’d like to see pictures of yours.

Thanks!

What do you mean ‘better mounting?’ There’s not that many ways to mount it except between your aerobars and with the provided rubberbands + velcro or with the mounting kit you can buy separately.

4 months & 400km of racing later (one Oly, two HIMs, one IM) I can happily report it works great…still using the same piece too
.

There is a better way to mount these and I promise to post a photo of it up here but it’s 4:37 AM so not right now… Please remind me this week.

Great question, I bought 1 last year mounted it with the provided rubber bands and found it to be unusable. I had to lean waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy to far over to get a drink and I had it mounted exactly as the pictures in this thread show. My straw is decent length but I found it would be easier in a race to grab a bottle from my cage then to lean so far forward to get a drink.

I had this problem also but as my position on the bike improved, so did my straw/mouth position. My position change wasn’t drastic. If the straw is just a little bit low, it is a pain to stretch to reach it.

The seperate mounting bracket is the way to go. Just using the rubber bands caused it to vibrate and rattle and was generally a nuisance. With the bracket it had more absorbtion and the rattles are virtually gone.

I didn’t realize there was a mounting bracket.

I think that you can see from showpony, and apparently from demerly as well, a bit of imagineering can do wonders.

That’s true…showpony’s (and I’m sure Tom’s will be too) contraption is pretty ingenious but I’m just not that imaginary (or ingenious) nor do I have the time to get it right.

But I do like and use the mounting bracket, it’s very stable and it gives you some adjustment for height. At az last year, I just used the rubberbands and one of them snapped and I threw away my aero bottle at an aid station because it was useless with only one rubberband.

I use the mounting bracket upside down (the bracket goes under the aerobars). The aerobottle is a little lower; the bottom is ~1 inch above the tire). I replaced the top straw with tube that was a bit more flexible & added a bite valve from an old camelback. The straw can be as long as you want & I can tuck in between the aerobottle & base bar when not in use.

Sorry–no pics.

If you have a bike with an aero head tube, such as the Cervelos, wind tunnel test show the aero bottle up front increases drag.

good thing I don’t ride a cervelo
.

Uh…even the 2005 cervelo dual (has an aero head tube?) or are you just saying the higher end models? Not that I’m going to be close to being a contender of my AG but just asking…

Did you happen to tell the world this mounting idea?

I have my extensions very narrow. So, the “wings” on the standard bracket put the bottle too high for my liking. I fixed it by making a simple, flat bracket out of a piece of carbon fiber sheet. Here it is…

And, here’s a more recent picture with my full cockpit…

Mickstar…i have the Planet X bars with big humps on the aerobars and nothing will fit, except maybe your design. Couple questions:

-where did you get the carbon fiber material
-what did you use to cut it

  • what is holding the carbon fiber plate to the bar? velcro?
-do you have your design template that i could get.

Mickstar…how is your garmin held in place? Looks like you have the quick release in place somehow…

It would be awesome if you could post a how-to or make a 1:1 template available. Perhaps even try to offer them for sale to fellow ST folks?

I got the carbon sheet from work. Just a scrap piece we had buried in a drawer.

I used a jigsaw with a fine-tooth (metal-cutting) blade, and sanded the edges with fine-grit after I had the final shape.

Velcro.

I didn’t make a template, but could trace it easily enough. (I just used the standard bracket as a template for making mine. But, it was a pain, since the carbon doesn’t flex like the standard, plastic bracket.) I could trace mine, scan it to .jpg and e-mail it. Not sure if the size/aspect ratio make get hosed in the process, though.
