Best Wheelset for Training

So I’m getting off my duff and starting to get into shape and have conveniently realised that my old training wheels are shot/kaput/dead.

Time to buy some new toys, but I don’t want to break the bank on a set of wheels that’ll see rain, snow, slush, damp, dirt and everything in between.

Any recommedations for a good set of Shimano compatible wheels for training.

I’m looking at the Easton EA90 SL and the Fulcrum Racing 5 or some handbuilt Mavic Open Pro wheels, but honestly don’t know where to start. I’m much more comfortable looking into picking up the latest Zipp 404 or 808 and possibly a sub 9 disc for when I get skinny and faster in a year or two.

Cheers,

Hard to beat open pros for reliability but I personally like my Neuvation M28 Aeros.

Thanks for the suggestion. The M28 Aero 3’s look hard to beat at the current price:

M28 Aero3 Front - $180.00 $79.00

M28 Aero3 Rear - $319.00 $140.00

At a total price of $244 (incl $25 shipping, not sure about tax yet) - this looks like a HARD bargain to beat.

Can anyone beat this for a recommendation or price? Or should I add a set of Neuvation M28 Aero 3’s to my Giant TCR Composite?

I have Mavic Open Pros with Dura-Ace hubs. Bombproof. If you happen to break a spoke you can still ride home. A buddy of mine swears by Neuvation wheels, and has never had any problems with them.

Couldn’t handle waiting for a new wheelset, since the bike comes back from it’s repairs later this week, and I sprung for the Neuvation M28 Aero 3’s and also upgraded to the ceramic bearings (only $40 extra/each wheel).

Once I get a few hundred miles on them over the next month or so I’ll post back my impressions.

Thanks for the suggestions - so glad I checked otherwise I probably would have spent 2x as much on something else.

When it comes to training wheels I say cheaper is better. Unless you want something a little more exotic for the enjoyment of riding nice wheels (and accept the risk of damaging one if you have a bad fall or hard chuckhole strike) then its hard to beat basic Shimano R500’s. Cheap and good. Put some heavy tires on there and you;re done. Not very exotic, but workmanlike.

16/20 spoke wheels for trainers? I have four years on my 32 spoke mavic open pros, they’ve taken a serious beating and are still relatively straight. I’d be surprised if these neuvation wheels hold up.

I trained on a set of Neuvation R28 S2’s for 2 years (probably 4000 miles on them) and they held up great! Round and true. Only reason I sold them was because I got a great deal on some Ksyrium SL’s for $200 from a friend. They were light, stiff and climbed very well. Anyway, I strongly recommend the Neuvations and if you DO have any troubles…John (the owner) will fix the situation lickity split! Enjoy your wheels!
