Best Wheelset $750 and under?

What is the best (durable) road bike wheelset for $750 or less?

Any recommendations for someone who is 220lbs and wants to do some racing?

That is, any recommendations for wheels. Hopefully that preempts and “lose weight” recommendations.

Do you want MSRP to be under 750? Or just wheels that you could find in good shape for under 750? Might be a dumb question, but some people just really like new stuff.

Go to Ebay. Find Kim’s Bike Shop

Get a set of Spinergy’s for like 650. Great wheel for price.

Easton Tempest II. Aero and very durable.

You can grab a pair off ebay for $400.

I love the ROL wheels I’ve got. Light, fast and durable. Sean provides outstanding customer service, so in my mind you cannot go wrong. Both the Volant and the Race SL are well under $750, and the price includes skewers, tubes, rim tape, a set of Continental GP 4000 tires and some extra spokes. Not that you’ll need th extra spokes, but including them says something about the customer service.

Great company, great wheels. Check them out:

Assuming when you mention “racing” you’re talking tri, you could cover all your training & racing needs for pretty close to $750 with:

Training

  • 32 spoke handbuilt training wheels…durable as anything, and depending on hub & rim choice you can get ‘em built reasonably light (more $$ tho’)

Racing

  • wheel cover cut for the above rear wheel…see www.wheelbuilder.com
  • used HED3 front…you might need to look around for a while on ebay for good one at a decent price
    .

Reynolds Solitude. Stiff, light, great spokes and hub. They run about $600.

I ride and race Bontrager Race X Lite (my shop’s a Trek store). They spin up crazy fast and are extremely durable to boot. The roads I ride on I used to have to true my Race Lite’s about once every 1-2 months. After 6 months on the new wheelset I have yet to set a wrench to a single spoke. I was able to get the '07’s on clearance last fall for $500.

race x lites or race x lite aeros?

If aero is a concern. I think the Williams wheels use Zipp rims and are pretty close that range.

One of the deep section aero wheels should work for you.

But at 220lbs you may be better with a 32H Open Pro on Ultegra Build and get the HED/Cover setup the other guy posted.

This was my $700 ish package

Zipp 404 OE front with Speedcific hubs and Sapim Spoke
30mm Rear with Speedcific hub. I broke my wife spirit and bought two 404’s
Wheelbuilder.com Wheelcover
Aero Helmet I got a good deal on a Limar Chrono Carbon for 90 bucks

All should be less than $750 total
