I’ve just purchased a Power-tap and was planning on building it into a Mavic open-pro rim with straight gauge spokes. (trying to make it “bomb proof”) But after further thought, it would be foolish to train with the PT and not race with it (1/2 and full IM’s next year).
So I’m looking for a durable wheel/rim suggestions that I can train and race on. Presently I have Ksyriums SL which do not accept the PT hub. I don’t want this to turn into a weight vs. aero debate. Thanks.
I highly recommend building it into a Hed Alps rim. I am having one built as we speak. My current PT Pro wheel is built around a CXP-33. But I have Alps training wheels for my tri-bike (to go with H3 race wheels). But there are B races that it would be nice to not only have aero wheels for, but also have power info. So I’m having another hub built into an Alps rim. I find the Alps to be nearly bullet proof for all training and racing. They’re about 80-100g heavier than a Zipp 404 rim, but I think they are more durable for a wheel that you will both train and race on. If you have two PT wheels, then maybe it makes sense to have one all-carbon rim.
Why not keep the Open Pros, go to a slightly lighter guage spoke (say a 14/15/14 or even a 15/16/15) and then slap a wheel cover in it? That way you’ll have a disc wheel with power readings that’s hella durable, and not too heavy (considering what you’ve got here).
