My understanding from Andy at HED is that the Vittoria CX 21 tubular was used on the Stinger C2 wheels used in the wind tunnel drag tests shown on the HED website. I have a Bonty RXL Pro which is practically the same width as the CX 21 but rolls a bit better. Based on hearing from others I think I had a “one off” experience but when I glued the tire on it “rotated” in the wide tire bed when I pumped it up resulting in one side not being glued very well. I used a strap clamp around the tire to solve that problem.
Tks for the reply
I read somewhere that they recommend a 22-23 tyre more than a 19. Any other tyre feature to take into consideration besides width?

I originally mounted a Vredestein Fortezza Pro TriComp (claimed 21mm width - more like 22mm when mounted and inflated to 130psi) and had the same problem as the other poster of the tire rolling when inflated. I also noticed that the Vredestein was slightly narrower than the rim and it was very difficult to get it centered. The ‘lip’ of the rim was visible when the Vredestein was mounted and inflated.
I didn’t try the strap trick to get the Vredestein to stick properly, I instead switched to the Vittoria Corsa Evo CX (23mm width - more like 22.5mm when mounted and inflated to 130psi). It didn’t roll upon inflation and it matched the width of the rim almost perfectly.
If I had to venture a guess as to why the Vredesteins roll, it would be that the ‘ridge’ under the base tape where the two ends of the carcass is sewn together seems far more pronounced on the Vredesteins than on the Vittorias. Mounting Vredesteins on my Zipps were a snap because of the recess for the ridge, whereas mounting them on my Renn 575 was more time consuming because of, what seemed to me, the tendency of the tire to ‘roll’ to one side of the ridge.
I have a new stinger coming. I purchased a 21mm Victoria EVO CX II. The new 320tpi version. Under $60 from Wiggle. Or under $60 and free shipping from PBK.
Have not tried it yet. This is the tire that was suppose to be have used in the testing done by HED on their web site.
What year are your wheels? I am not talking about the new wheels, these are 2 or 3 years old.

PS Rappstar agreed that the bontrager tubular is the best bet for these wheels with I think at different widths front/back

I am talking about the older ones, I think they are structurally different.
Has anybody tried something like Tufo on these?
Peace
Tufo? I had a Tufo S3 Lite 215gm - with tape - on a Stinger 60 (2 year old version) that I picked up on Ebay that way and it worked fine. I just removed the tire because the Zipp valve extender was deformed and couldn’t be removed without taking the tire off. While at it, I opted to replace the tire. HED recommended a Vittoria Evo CX in a 21mm width but said that this year’s model (the Stinger 6) should use the 23mm version.
I’ve read that Tufo’s have high rolling resistance, especially with the tape but are very durable. Hope this helps.
Thanks I have heard similar about the CRR but flat resistance is somewhat important for me
wonder what the watt or time difference over 40k is between this or a vittoria evo for instance. I mean if it 30 secs I really won’t care

ivansie,
There are several threads that cover the topic. here’s one of them:

My own experience was that I couldn’t really tell a difference in race speeds with a Tufo S3 Lite and another front wheel with a Continental Comp (another tire with a good reputation for durability), although I only rode the Tufo twice and the wheels are different. If you are interested, I could sell you the tire for cheap (it’s in new condition) - email me (heathc at earthlink dot net) for photos…oops, I hope this post doesn’t belong in Classifieds!
Any opinions on Veloflex Carbons 22mm… How will this go with Hed Stingers?
