Best tent-camping area for IMC (2008)?

I’ll be up in Penticton to sign up for the 2008 race.

While I’m there I’d like to pick a campground that is good for tent-camping.

Anyone have a favorite?

I guess my criteria might be,

  • Proximity to race start,
  • Quiet,
  • Shade,
  • Generally nice space for a tent,
  • Clean showers.

Do they open for reservations a year in advance? Thinking of reserving TWO sites, so there will be space for family members who decide to come up and spectate.

Also, what day of the week do you plan to arrive on-site prior to a Sunday race? I have barely given this any thought.

Thanks!

Oleander,
we are staying in the Park Royal RV park located on the north end of Penticton just about 1/2 mile from the start. But they only allow RV’s and campers. No tent camping. There is a park on the south end of town I think it’s called Oxbow Park…but most places have a 5 day or 7 day min during Ironman week and are usually booked by March. Here are some links Good luck

Park Royal is the closest to the Expo and the south end of Pentiction is about 3-4 miles from the start.

All places are on Skaha Lake… nowhere near the race start…
They’re all passable… I’ve stayed at most of them… just try and get a spot if you can!

I have stayed at two places. One in town (can’t remember the name but south by the other lake) is convenient but the space you get is just about big enough for your car and a 10x10 tent. People are packed in like sardines. Have to pay for showers, two loonies if I remember correctly for about 5 minutes of water. There is also a KOA I stayed at about 10 miles outside of town. Much more room but a lot less convenient to all the IM stuff. Not a big thing if you are only going to drive it once a day.
