Best tasting IM fuels?

I’m starting to try to dial in my IM fuel for this summer, and would like to use products that don’t make me gag. Last year I used perpetuum in a half-IM with some success, but when it gets warm I have a hard time handling the taste. I’d love to just use Gatorade, gels and bananas but I know from experience that when the temps spike the sugar from the Gatorade and gels is too much to handle. So I’m looking for something that I’ll be able to tolerate at hour 6 in the bike, but that isn’t as loaded with simple sugars.

Also, can someone link me to Dan E’s article on Ironman nutrition? I don’t seem to be able to find it using the serach function on the home page. Thanks.

Carbo-Pro with your own flavour added in to get the taste you want with all the calories you want.

second that…

Mix it with your favorite flavored gatorade…there’s a ton out there
.

Carbo-Pro + Interphase Protein. They make the Interphase in Choc or Van. I go back and forth.

Flavour can be what ever you like…I have tried protein(choclate), or a weaker gatorade.

I honestly have even just gotten used to the straight Carbo-pro…a little sweet, but after 100miles i still can drink it.

Practice with it LOTS what ever you decide to avoid stomach problems…but i have not had any even with the diff mixtures i have created.

E-Fuel Tropical Punch plus Carbo-Pro, and Strawberry Slam E-Gels.

Frozen PJBs

Fig Newtons

Snickers Marathon Bars

I know of a guy who used to be in my club who got by on peanutbutter and mayo sandwiches and skittles. I believe he went in the low 9-hour range in Kona.

Try Energice’s gel - amazing stuff, tastes and has the same consistency of Jell-O. MAkes me smile everytime I take one when training /racing, a nice little treat.

chocolate and bananas.

For the bike I like Carbo Pro with 1 scoop Cytomax for flavor and 1/8 tsp salt. For a IM I mix two bottles plus use Carb Boom gels. I can actually tolerate my mixture even when it gets warm. For a 1/2 IM I just carry one bottle of my mixture and skip the gels. I like to keep things simple when racing.

I just drink whatever they offer on the run.

try infinIT nutrition, you can formulate whatever you want based on your specific needs. No need to play guessing games with mixing carbo pro+cytomax+salt+whatever. You choose the formula you want based on your body type, sweat rate, training volume, and many other factors. You also control the taste.

Mocha Clifshots! The spot of caffine in them was heaven!

Erik, what I like about Carbo Pro is that you can mix it real thick. I can carry 900 calories in a 20 oz bottle. There’s no guessing for me. I consume about 300 cals per hour during the bike. So I know exactlly how many swigs of CP to take every 15 minutes. This has really worked well for me during my last 7 ironmans.

Can you mix infinIT thick like CP? If so, I might give it a try. I’m always ready to try new things.

I go with the usual gu and powerbar crap. But in each of the three IM I have done I have eaten a mcdonald’s hamburger halfway through the bike ride- heavily salted. I put it in a bag in a bag with ice. Really gave me some juice and was a welcome relief from sicky sweet crap.

FYI, I do not work for infinIT, but I use the product. You can mix it however you want. It is similar to Carbo Pro, but it also contains everything you need.

Here is a side by side, as I have both cans in front of me. The InfinIT is a formulation I created for myself based on the template of the product they have on their website.

Carbo Pro per serving (2) scoops Calories 224 Total Fat/Saturated Fat - 0g Cholesterol - 0g Sodium - 0mg Potassium - 0mg Total Carbohydrate 56.7g Fiber,Sugars, Protien 0g

InfinIT Erik’s Formula (2) scoops Calories 224 Total Fat/Saturated Fat - 0g Cholesterol - 0g Sodium - 557mg Potassium - 163mg Total Carbohydrate 56g Sugars - 21g Calcium - 25mg Magnesium - 50mg

I have even added a small amount of protien to my latest batch. Not nearly the 4:1 ratio like Accelerade, as I find that to be too much for me. By using infinIT I have eliminated the need for extra salt tabs, and gels on the bike. I get all I need from the drink. I take in some water also but not too much. The owner of the company is very helpful, check out the website and see what you think. They are getting rave reviews over at Gordo’s site also.

2nd the motion on that mixture. Two large bottles on the bike to start and two frozen ones in the special needs bag wrapped with tin foil - 500 cal each. They were still cold at the pick up at CDA - mile 63 and a warm day. I carried Inervittene as a back up on the bike just in case of a loss of bottle(s).
