I did my first half IM in Door County a couple weeks ago and am already planning a half next summer. I live in Minneapolis and am not huge on biking and swimming outdoors until it warms up. Hence the request for a summer half iron. I’ll travel anywhere reasonable (states or Canada). What is your favorite half iron in July, August, or September? I prefer a bigger race, so nothing under 300 participants please.
Additional resources you may or may not already be aware of:
www.trifind.com - filter for HALF IRON and you get a great list or just browse state by state www.slowtwitch.com - see CALENDAR feature for a growing list with race ratings etc.
Having done Door County twice (skipped this year), you’ve managed to set the bar pretty darn high for quality standards. I’m struggling to think of a non-branded 70.3 that would even compare that I have done.
I did IM 70.3 Kansas this year and absolutely loved it. The bike was hilly, the run was through the host camp ground, and the crowd support (at said camp ground) was incredible. It’s early June, so maybe a bit early for your schedule. I live in Northern WI, so I feel your pain on outdoor training. If you sign up for Kansas - stay at the campground!!! That is, if you enjoy camping.
The Rev3 in CT was awesome. Everyone was treated like a pro. Transition was amazing - had amazing bike racks where you didn’t have to rack by your bar ends or seat. Plus, if you have a family, it was one of the most spectator friendly events I’ve ever done.
Timberman is good, but to be honest, and I may get harassed for saying this - I think the bike course is unsafe. 2008 - I saw at least two people pushed off the road by drivers not willing to share…plus, I got clipped by a side mirror near an intersection because the driver was impatient.
Seriously, Rev3 was amazing.
If you can squeak back to June, the Hawaii 70.3 is AWESOME. The swim was like a snorkel session. One of my buddies just followed the manta ray swimming 20 feet below him.
can’t believe no one has mentioned it: the Muncie Endurathon in Muncie IN (in mid July). Longest running HIM in the country so they must be doing something right.
Another vote for Kyle’s race, Savageman.
Did the Oly last year at the last minute, signed up for the half right away this year. One of the best/most fun races I’ve done. Kick ass food and ice cream too after the event!
